Honda City 2020 Overview
New York City has been one of Honda's longest-running nameplates since the early 1980s and is now entering a new generation with many changes inside and outside and under the skin. The appearance style represents a subtle evolution of the model it replaces, and the ultra-compact sedan borrowed some clues from Civic here and there while retaining its own personality. In the spacious interior... and the spongy boot space. It feels more planted on the road than most city cars, and the engine is compact but frugal. Like all Hondas, it has a five-year warranty. The UAE recently released the 2020 Honda City facelift. There are three trim options for the sedan: DX, LX, and EX. All variants share a common power source, the 1.5-liter SOHC i-VTEC gasoline mill, which produces a full power of 119 PS and a peak torque of 145 Nm. The plant is paired with Honda's next-generation CVT gearbox and has a range of 20 km. The exterior of the modified model has been redesigned, including new honeycomb grille, LED DRL, diamond-cut alloy wheels, and improved taillights.
Exterior
The latest City has a new style but is still recognizable as a City sedan. At the front, it retains a thicker chrome band above the grille, but with a larger, sharper wrap-around headlight, which is likely to be an LED projector with DRL on high-spec models. The grille itself is larger than the grille of the current car. Its bumper has a sharp shape.
On the side, the front shoulder line of the new car is more prominent from the headlights to the taillights. At the same time, the fourth-generation character line starts from the taillights and ends at the driver's door. Both models have subtle creases in the lower part of the door and feature diamond-cut alloy wheels.
In the rear, the new City surround taillights extend further to the side of the car. As before, the light itself is an LED unit but now uses a 3D design with a black upper part. Compared to the horizontal direction of the predecessor mirror, the mirror is now also placed vertically. The fifth-generation also lost the chrome strip between the taillights on the current model.
Interior
For the fifth generation, New York City will get a brand-new dashboard that has few similarities to the fourth-generation model. The new City in Thai spec has an all-black interior theme, while the Indian-spec car may have a beige/black theme to make it consistent with the current model. In addition, it retains brushed aluminum and piano black trim on the dashboard of existing cars, helping to enhance the cab.
The outgoing asymmetrical dashboard of Manchester has been replaced by a more direct design approach, with a large 8.0-inch touch screen in the center and vertical air conditioning vents on both sides. Interestingly, Honda also seems to have canceled the touchscreen-based climate control settings of outgoing cars, enabling a more user-friendly traditional three-dial setting. In terms of instrumentation, the new City will continue to use dual analog dials and large multi-information displays. However, the MID of the current City is on the right side of the two dials, and the MID of the new car is between the two. The three-spoke steering wheel is also new, as is the brushed aluminum pedal.
In terms of features, the new City maintains the current list of the most advanced urban equipment, including six airbags, ABS with EBD, automatic climate control, cruise control, LED lights, and large touchscreen infotainment screens. The new Thai-spec City is also equipped with vehicle stability control and uphill assist systems. It remains to be seen whether these features will make it suitable for Indian-spec sedans.
Mileage
The core of the new City is a turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engine, which is expected to provide the torque of a naturally aspirated 1.8-liter engine, and its performance is higher than the 1.5-liter engine of the previous generation model. This small 1.0-liter unit can be connected to a seven-speed continuously variable transmission (CVT) that sends 120 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and transfers 173 Newton-meters (128 pound-feet) of torque from 2,000 rpm wheels.
Pros and cons
Pros
• Honda City is impeccable in terms of cabin space and comfort and continues to be the benchmark in this category. Honda's rear cockpit continues to provide best-in-class leg and knee space, with ample support and headroom, making it one of the most comfortable cockpits in the entry-level sedan category.
• Despite nearly a decade of history in basic engineering, Honda's 1.5-litre petrol engine is still one of the most refined and delightful engines in the entry-level space. The engine has excellent improvements and revs without feeling sluggish over the entire rev range.
• The current generation of Honda has all the best-in-class comfort and convenience features usually associated with a car above it. The feature list includes electric sunroofs, full LED headlights, leather interior trim, curtain airbags, and push-button start-stop systems, which not only enhances Honda's interior atmosphere but also justifies its premium label.
Cons
• Although the arrow-strike design compliments Honda's aerodynamic shape, the overall outline and basic design of the car have begun to show its age. The overall basic design has been around for almost five years without much change. Although features such as LED headlights and machined alloy wheels did try to improve the design of the car, in the past few years, Honda's side profile and front and rear design have hardly changed.
• Despite the many feel-good features, Honda's overall dashboard design now looks too lucid and outdated in front of the cabins of other cars in its space. Some switches in the cabin also need to be upgraded in terms of quality.
