Tomas Bata University in Zlín (TBU) is a dynamically growing higher education institution comprised of six faculties offering students the possibility of studying humanities, natural sciences, technology and art. Tomas Bata University in Zlín (TBU) offers a wide range of courses that reflect the latest trends of higher education in Europe and in the world. Our aim, which is based on the Bata philosophy, is to educate graduates who have acquired the essential skills they need to develop successful careers in an international environment. Every year, several hundred students from Europe, America, Asia and Africa study in Zlín; as well as our students are offered an opportunity to spend a part of their studies at some of our partner universities situated all over the world.
The University lays great emphasis on the development of internationalization. International students study at TBU in degree programmes accredited in Czech or English to get their Bachelor"s, Master"s or doctoral degree, in exchange programmes, summer schools, etc. (see the menu on the right).
Our student body is multicultural and comes from more than 40 countries worldwide, creating a valuable environment for intercultural interaction, knowledge sharing and an enriching experience for all. In addition, a student organization - Buddy System Zlín - exists in Zlín, that takes care of international students, helps them with everyday activities and makes their days at TBU easier and more pleasant.
In 2012, a prestigious certificate - ECTS Label - was awarded to TBU by the European Commission. The ECTS Label is the most significant European certificate awarded in the sphere of tertiary education and is recognized as a proof of high quality of the higher education institution.
The Research and Development activities are organized within the TBU faculties and carried out by means of research projects and grant projects offered by the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic, by the Grant Agency of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic and by means of grant projects offered by the competent ministries of the government of the Czech Republic. Furthermore, the faculties cooperate with the scientific institutes at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in the instruction of students in doctoral programmes.
The cooperation between the TBU faculties and companies and institutions of public sector administration in the field of R&D aims at achieving results applicable to enterprise practice.
The R&D activities at TBU are focusing on basic and applied research.
TBU follows a longstanding tradition of the Faculty of Technology, which was founded in Zlín in 1969and since than has educated hundreds of highly-qualified professionals. The University is named after the originator of the shoe industry in Zlín and a world-famous entrepreneur Tomáš Baťa (1876 – 1932).
At TBU, considerable emphasis is laid on teaching English and other foreign languages. The offer of its degree programmes taught in English has been continually extended. Maximum support is given to all forms of international cooperation, i.e. student exchanges, lectures and teaching internships, joint research projects, etc. The University offers a three-level study based on the European Credit Transfer System. Its graduates are issued the Diploma Supplement, the aim of which is to enhance their position in the European labour market. It is recognized all over Europe. In 2009 the University was awarded the prestigious Diploma Supplement Label by the European Commission (for the second time), which has raised its reputation among other higher education institutions in Europe. In 2012 TBU was awarded the ECTS Label by the European Commission, which is the most prestigious European certificate awarded in the sphere of tertiary education.
TBU is a member of numerous international organizations. Its membership in the EUA (European University Association), which associates over 800 universities from 46 countries in Europe, is one of the most prestigious ones. It enables the University to participate in all the EUA’s significant activities aiming to support higher education in Europe and so to present itself to the whole of the European academic community. The University has also signed the Magna Charta Universitatum of Bologna, which among other things aims to support scientific development and freedom, and to remove boundaries when gaining and transferring knowledge. The Charta signatories undertake to create conditions for teacher and student mobility. TBU is also a member of the Danube Rectors’ Conference, which associates universities in the Danube region, and of some other institutions.
A high quality university is characterized by advanced research and development. Some areas of research, such as polymer engineering, chemistry or automation and technology process control, have earned TBU excellent reputation abroad.
The Centre of Polymer Systems is an important research unit in which more than one hundred scientists from all over the world are based; a number of these have won international awards for their work. Also the staff of the Faculty of Applied Informatics have won international acclaim for their achievements, particularly in the sphere of mathematical modelling of processing or study into non-conventional energy sources. Applied and industrial research is carried out also at the University Institute.
Two University technology parks serve to form links between research and practice. One is focused on cooperation with plastics processing and food processing companies, the other on information technology companies.
