The Danish Cancer Society has more than 400,000 members - and almost 45,000 volunteers doing what corresponds to around 870 full-time job...s. With around 690 full-time employees, the Danish Cancer Society therefor has more volunteers than employees.
We are a democratic membership organisation, whose course is charted by the volunteers and members. The volunteers represent the highest authority of the Danish Cancer Society. They elect the president, set the rules and regulations of the society and identify our main focus areas.
The Danish Cancer Society is a disease-combating association. The Danish Cancer Society works to be a voice for cancersufferers. Through research, prevention and patient support, the Society fights to minimise the number of cancer cases, increase the number of cancer survivors and optimise conditions for cancer sufferers and their relatives to ensure the best life possible after cancer. The Danish Cancer Society’s activities are based on the strongest pool of knowledge available, a common set of values, a common ethical basis and popular support. Volunteering and financial support from the Danish population are the prerequisite for the Danish Cancer Society’s research, prevention and patient support activities. Only a small portion of the Society’s work is funded by the government in the form of public pools and lottery funds. The Danish Cancer Society is a democratic association based on membership and volunteering.
In 2016, almost 45,000 people volunteeredfor the Danish Cancer Society. This means that the number of volunteers has increased by some 22% since 2009. The number of hours that volunteers invest in their work is up about 104% since 2009. This equals roughly 869 full-time positions. That is about 200 more full-time positions than the number of employees at the Danish Cancer Society which had 688 full-time employees at 31 December 2016.The large increase in volunteering hours is particularly due to much greater involvement in Relay for Life, Pink Saturday, the Igen thrift shops and patient support.
The Danish Cancer Society has local units in almost all municipalities in Denmark, with volunteers making a targeted effort to boost local cancer-policy efforts. In addition, there are volunteers on the Society’s five regional committees and the Central Board. The volunteering commitment in the Danish Cancer Society is strong and robust. To ensure that this continues, the Society works to make it easier and more meaningful to be a volunteer. We need to come up with new ways of involving volunteers, increasing diversity among volunteers and strengthening our organisational democracy.
