Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest (MOME) is one of the most significant European institutions of visual culture due to its traditions and intellectual background.
In its effort to visualize its professional concepts MOME compounds its own character and traditions with the most up-to-date trends. Its educational structure comprises architecture, design, media, as well as th...eory. Therefore, MOME has a great international potential considering its broad field of education and synthesis of students. The three-cycle study structure (BA/MA/DLA) provides adequate flexibility and mobility for its students. MOME’s definite ambition is to further broaden its international relations. It welcomes every professional co-operation which inspires its educational and artistic work.
MOME on the one hand is a university which educates professional designers, and on the other hand an intellectual workshop with the aim of setting up creative process in order to enhance design consciousness in Hungary.
The Hungarian Royal Institute of Arts and Crafts opened its doors on November 14th 1880 with its first class, the carving workshop. The Institute belonged to the Hungarian Royal School of Model Drawing and Teacher Training – a predecessor of the University of Fine Arts – founded in 1870. The institution was placed into the (former) Music Academy"s building on Andrássy Avenue. In the 1880s and 90s, a number of new classes were added: model drawing, metalwork, wood engraving, decorative painting, copper engraving, and statuette sculpting and decorative sculpting. Starting from the academic year 1887/88, a 2-year preparatory course was added, thus extending the 3-year training program to 5- year.
Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest was acknowledged by the Hungarian Government with the University of National Excellence title for the period of 2013-2016.
The management and the Senate of the University decided about the utilization of the subsidy, so that this sum will not be appropriated for the operating costs of the institution, but, insisting on the meaning of the Excellence title, it will serve the raising of the University"s excellence.
As part of the decision, the subsidy can not be split up, but it must be spent on the actuation or carrying on of real and substantive, visible programmes instead. The management of the University therefore chose the existing or planned projects that will be supported with an Excellence subsidy by an internal tender.
Applications sent off were discussed by the directorate of the University on the basis of professional aspects, a board of six members rated them by scoring, and after this Rector of the University decided about the list of the applications to be supported. The judgement of the board and the descision of the Rector were unanimous.
The Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest as the home of arts, crafts and design has contributed in many ways to the enhancement of design culture within and outside Hungary. Besides its training programs, the university contributes to the rise of visual culture through its teacher training courses in art studies and design. Our art manager program provides a link between the various branches of economy and the arts. MOME provides top edge quality training, not only in its graduate courses but also in its thematic doctoral programmes as well as in various other postgraduate courses. Our training programs as well as the university’s library, art gallery and publications render our university an important intellectual center of arts and design. At a time of dynamic growth and internationalisation, our institution seeks new paths in the preservation of the noble tradition and the further development of the outstanding achievements of Hungarian design.
