Established concurrently with the restructuring of the Hungarian higher education system, Kaposvár University was founded on the 1st of January, 2000, by the joint decision and fusion of its founder legal predecessors, integrating two faculties and two research institutes.
Prior to their integration, the predecessor institutions constituting Kaposvár University had successfully cooperated in several areas of research and education. The key motivators for their cooperation were the mutually advantageous complementarity of their scientific areas and the outstanding human and working relationship maintained between teachers and researchers.
With its human and infrastructure resources the Feed Crops Research Institute found an ideal partner in the Faculty of Animal Breeding, complementing its scientific background in feed crops and other crops production. As a result of the institutional reorganization and in order to more accurately express the subject matter of education, research, extension services and other services they provided, the Faculty of Animal Breeding was renamed to become Faculty of Animal Science, while Csokonai Vitéz Mihály Teachers’ Training College was renamed to become Csokonai Vitéz Mihály Faculty of Pedagogy.
The plan for institutional reorganization prepared by Kaposvár University received a grade “A” (excellent) qualification from the Ministry of Education in the year 2000. The university drew up in the plan of institutional reorganization its vision for the future; the educational, research and services strategies required for its implementation, together with the necessary human resource and infrastructure development concepts. So far the strategic concept has been successfully completed in proportion to time.
The documentation for establishing and launching numerous new majors in the fields of economic and social sciences, special needs education, humanities and arts were prepared in accordance with the development concept of the new faculties.
The grade “A” qualification of the institutional reorganization plan resulted in state financed investment projects and a successful human resource development, which created the conditions for receiving an increased number of students and running new majors and faculties. A new educational building complex, a multifunctional student center, a new central library and a new, modern student hostel for 347 students have been completed. The total surface area of the new buildings adds up to 14502 m2.
In addition to the investment projects, Resolution No 218/2004 (VII.9.) of the Government created the Faculty of Economic Science and the Faculty of Arts at Kaposvár University as a result of the successful accreditation procedure. With the establishment of these new faculties the institution was expanded to become a university with four faculties (Animal Science, Economic Science, Pedagogy and Arts).
Economics education begun at the university with the establishment of the Faculty of Economic Science. By further developing the resources which served the “economics in agricultural engineering” programme previously run by the Faculty of Animal Science for many years, and in cooperation with Corvinus University, a finance and accounting BSc programme has been launched, opening the possibility for expanding the educational spectrum with further programmes in the field of economic sciences.
The creation of the Faculty of Arts added a completely new area of education to the university profile. Launching the design, teacher of visual communication, actor, applied scenery design and photography programmes contributes to the formation of a new rural center for arts education.
The restructuring of higher education along the lines of the Bologna Process has been a great challenge for Kaposvár University as well. This mission has been successfully accomplished since the university was given launch permits to convert all existing majors into BSc majors at each faculty, moreover it was able to add new programmes to the existing portfolio.
The Institute of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Oncology of Kaposvár University boasts a world-renowned teacher-researcher base and applies imaging diagnostics to conduct a broad scope of animal science research, to provide human diagnostic services, besides dynamically developing various other disciplines, such as soil-research, forestry-timber industry, geology, physics, archeology, to satisfy the ever increasing demand with the cooperating institutions and companies. Its research staff maintaining extensive international relations wins worldwide recognition for Kaposvár University in the fields of education, research and human diagnostics, equally.
The institute possessing cutting-edge CT and MR equipment, linked quality human resource development with the implementation of a new oncoradiology building complex to provide the infrastructure for radiotherapeutic researches and human diagnostic services.
By its resolution 17/2004 (IX. 22.) the Council of Kaposvár University established the Health Center as of January 1st, 2005, which functions as a partly independent operating unit within Kaposvár University.
The University Council decided to implement further development projects aimed at expanding the scope of educational, research, extension services and other services in accordance with the university’s strategy concept, when it accepted to integrate as of January 1st, 2006 the Equestrian Academy and the Game Farming Center together with the Kiskunfélegyháza Red Deer Breeding Farm, which were returned to Kaposvár University from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
In 2006 the Hungarian Accreditation Committee completed the second assessment round of Kaposvár University, concluding with a grade “A” qualification. In the report the dynamic development of the university and the expansion of its activities to several academic fields was given emphasis. The infrastructural, personal and material conditions for a high-standard educational and research activity have been successfully implemented.
The cooperation between faculties is ensured by excellent technical conditions. The transition to the linear educational structure has raised fewer problems compared to other higher education institutions.
