Assam Agricultural University is the first institution of its kind in the whole of North-Eastern Region of India. The main goal of this institution is to produce globally competitive human resources in farm sectorand to carry out research in both conventional and frontier areas for production optimization as well as to disseminate the generated technologies as public good for benefitting the fo...od growers/produces and traders involved in the sector while emphasizing on sustainability, equity and overall food security at household level.

Provisioning of quality human resource to facilitate technology led agricultural renaissance revitalizing and rejuvenating post-green revolution in agriculture ensuring both production and environment sustainability targeting a minimum of 4% agricultural growth while addressing the issues of household nutritional security, farmers" distress, commerce in agriculture as well as regional, national and global food crisis taking the advantage of innovative technology, market reforms and liberalization.
Mission is to fill up talent gap in agriculture and allied sector to preposition the state to combat the emerging challenges in agriculture and ensure productivity increase in agri-horti-animal-fish crops on the face of shrinking/fragmented land holdings, ailing soil health, diminishing water resources and increased human population.Technology showcasing and transfer to the user groups for science led agricultural growth.
The Rev. B M Pugh library being the knowledge centre on agriculture and allied areas was established in 1969, located in the Head Quarter of the university at Jorhat. It serves the students, teachers/scientists, research scholars and other staff of the colleges, viz., College of Agriculture and College of Home Science as well as staff and students of newly established College of Horticulture and College of Sericulture in particular and the entire community of the university in general. It has its branch libraries at the College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara; College of Fisheries Science, Raha; Biswanath College of Agriculture, Biswanath Chariali; Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science, Lakhimpur and Sarat Chandra Singha College of Agriculture, Dhubri.
The Rev. B. M. Pugh Library has a total of 1,69,785 books, 50 current periodicals, 16,711 back volumes, 2639 Post graduate theses, 7521 reports, 19 popular magazines & newspapers. In addition, the Library has CAB-CDs, CABI e-books of Agriculture and allied fields covering the period 1972-2012 and onwards. Under the sponsorship of the ICAR, the Library has facilitated online access to 13,097 e-journals (including CeRA, DeLCON, Krishiprobha, CAB Abstract, CABI E-books etc.) on Agriculture and related sciences. The Library also provides facilities to full text access of Ph.D. thesis on Agriculture through a noble project of ICAR known as, Krishiprabha. The Library has a LAN setup with 30 terminals and the software SOUL has been used for developing catalogue database. Recently the library has taken necessary steps for complete automation of the library by implementation of KOHA software under ICAR library strengthening project.
The Training and Placement Cell of Assam Agricultural University was set up in 1998. The Training & Placement Cell is an essential component of Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat catering to the needs of its students for their career development. The cell organizes training programmes on Personality Development, Communication Skills, Leadership and such other areas. The cell facilitates Campus interviews and placement in various government and non government organizations. Large number of the graduate and post graduate students of this university have been placed in different organizations involved in Research and Development, Business, Banking areas in Agriculture, Veterinary Science, Fishery Science and Home science and all of them have undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
