Aichi University of the Arts was founded on April 1, 1966 for the purpose of creating distinctive cultural sphere in the middle part of Japan, the Chubu Region. This foundation was responding to the Region"s industrial economic growth centering in Aichi Prefecture. Additionally, the university"s graduate school for a master"s degree was established four years later,on April 1, 1970 to contribut...e to the enrichment of culture and society through advanced in-depth research for artistic theory and application. On April 1, 2009, the graduate school began to offer a doctoral program. The mission of the university since its founding is "to cultivate creativity, based on studies of art and applied art, that could contribute to the development of culture." While educational circumstances, particularly in higher education, and social needs for universities have undergone drastic changes, the art education and researtch conducted by universities have been increasingly shaped by integration and diversification. The university, based on its 50 years" experience, will continue to serve as an advanced and unique educational institution responding appropriately to the needs of the times and society while fostering still more creative individuals leading the 21st century.
The Aichi University of the Arts invites artists from around Japan and overseas to its campus as Artists in Residence to collaborate on educational, performance and creative activities. By inviting a variety of working artists (both individuals and groups), we aim to encourage exchanges with our faculty and students that will result in fresh educational and research perspectives and invigorate our campus.
Commonly found in universities, museums and orchestras in the West, such residence programs provide the invited artists with a place to explore their creative practice in new contexts. The artists in residence give workshops, and present or recite new ideas and works that differ significantly from the university"s regular curriculum. A major feature of our university"s Artist-in-Residence Program is shared spaces for daily activities, which encourages close exchange among artists, faculty and students.
Created and run by the Center for Promoting Fine Arts and Music, the Artist-in-Residence Program contributes greatly to the university"s medium-term plan core objectives of international exchange, strengthening of partnerships with other educational organizations, and enhancement of cross-disciplinary education at the university.
AUA has a duty as a lighthouse for arts. Various ships traverse the open sea of art, confirm their present location and chart a course by referring to the beacon light from the lighthouse. Some ships may sail east, some may sail west, some may soar up into the sky or dive in deep water. There is no correct and exact answer in art; as many new different forms of art may be born as the number of aspiring artists. AUA watches over the birth of new art as it is.
While aiming to nurture art of the highest international standard, AUA is expected to continue with its efforts to broaden the base for the arts and increase the number of art fans. To meet this requirement, AUA must promote artistic exchange and collaboration with various different fields. When art is nurtured to be the best and utilized for society, the stimulus of utilization deepens art in one aspect. Although new stimuli, like a double-edged sword, are also accompanied by pain, but such is the nature of creation. Just as this is the case in all healthy activities of society, art is no exception. Art is an ongoing adventure; where there are no new ideas, there are no fresh and attractive musical performances or artworks. Let us have the encourage to knock on new doors and accept new challenges.
