Gifu Pharmaceutical University (GPU) is a Japanese public university located in the city of Gifu, and supported by Gifu City government. The predecessor of GPU Pharmacy School was founded in 1932, and established as a university in 1948. There have been considerable efforts made over the past 80 years in order to achieve excellence in university research and education. GPU offered a Master’s ...degree program for the first time in 1953 followed by a Doctoral program in 1965. GPU consists of two departments,
Department of Pharmacy with a six-year undergraduate course and Department of Pharmaceutical Science with a four-year undergraduate course. Department of Pharmacy offers hands-on training for future pharmacists to be able to work with doctors and nurses, while Department of Pharmaceutical Science produces highly-trained researchers and medical professionals. With the establishment of our new headquarter in 2011, Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) and GPU inaugurated the first joint graduate school providing higher quality learning environments and postgraduate education. The graduate school aims to produce medical professionals in the field of medicines, medical services as well as medical devices.
GPU is ranked among the best colleges of pharmacy in the nation. Our motto is who we are “Strong, Fair, and Bright” with contributions to humanity. GPU has been educating its students in order to be able to contribute to social health and welfare based on the concepts of Green Pharmacy, and the environmentally friendly design of chemical products and processes. With a pool of talented professors, GPU produced more than 11.000 quality pharmacists, researchers, and developers who joined the workforce at pharmaceutical companies, medical and environmental institutions in Japan and overseas. In addition, GPU is characterized by highly qualified teachers, high quality research and bright students. Our faculty members have developed a cutting-edge curriculum, which when coupled with life-long learning, will provide our graduates with the requisite professional foundation to practice the profession of pharmacy at an extremely high level for many decades to come.
In the Department of Pharmacy we strive to develop students who have the skills, knowledge and professionalism regarding the dosage, dispensing and patient care under clinical pharmacy practices. Students are continually updated with the most current progress related to the medical science fields as well as the changes which occur in the work place. Our graduates, once passing the National licensure are able to find employment as professional pharmacists working with medical teams treating a variety of patients. We stress a humanistic approach based on high ethical standards. Some students also find work as civil servants in public health, private companies and industries that focus on pharmaceutical research.
Through an extended six year curriculum students acquire standard skill sets and move on to the acquisition of more advanced skills through internships at our own pharmacy, retail pharmacies as well as those located in hospitals.
GPU offers opportunity to faculty members to be delegated to universities or research institutes overseas and also accepts professors or researchers from all over the world. Especially, GPU has established the deeper relationships with Pharmaceutical University of China and Zhejiang University by exchanging faculty members or students. We also established oversea scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students to study abroad with using the foundation donated by an alumnus, Mr. Hajime Murayama in 2013. By this scholarships, students have been sent to University of Florida and developed the cultural understanding.
