Kogakkan is located within a lushly green, natural environment near the sacred shrine precincts of Ise Jingu. Since 1882, the spirit of Shinto has formed its foundation and the school has sought to become a center of scholarship and education where Japanʼs dignity and identity are developed through investigation of the scholarly legacy in which the nation’s history and traditions are rooted....
Since the founding of our university in 1882, Kogakkan University has inherited the spirit of Shinto that underlies our university"s philosophy in a consistent fashion, and practiced our philosophy through various academic studies. In addition, from an educational perspective, the goal of our university is to foster individuals having deep knowledge about Japan with dignity and identity as Japanese, while making contributions to development of a modern society. We marked the 130th anniversary of the founding of our university and the 50th anniversary of reopening last year. Recognizing the roots of our university, we strive to expand equipment and environments for our educational research facilities, along with the enhancement of academic research systems. We are improving education toward the development of human resources that can meet social innovations in a new era.
In this chaotic and rapidly changing contemporary world, we are appealing to unchanging universal values that transcend time periods. We are also cultivating love of family, local regions, and the nation along with a sense of reverence for nature and life. In addition, by drawing from the fields of history, literature, language, religion, ethics, education, and social welfare, we are clarifying what Japanese spiritual culture means. Striving to accomplish these objectives, we are nurturing capable individuals who will be respected even on the international stage. Moreover, our educational programs are working to develop students who will play a central role in local communities as leaders of regional revitalization. As we move into the future, we plan to continue learning from the collective wisdom of our ancestors, and with pride as Japanese, produce capable graduates. By pursuing continual improvement in education and research, we will endeavor to live up to the trust society has placed in us.
The educational objectives at Jingu Kogakkan shall be to grasp the imperial nation’s values, gain an understanding of its scholarship, and put this learning into practice. In doing so, while holding firm to ethical conduct, one will be able to contribute to the advancement of civilization. Without devotion to one’s studies, there can be no comprehension, and without reflection on the content, there can be no mastery. This is all the more important to recognize given the gravity and value of the school’s mission.
Currently, Japan is facing many issues including globalization, declining birth rate and population ageing, and shallow interpersonal relationships. Under these circumstances, universities are now being questioned regarding what role they should play when facing such issues. Our university, with three schools including six departments in the field of cultural and social sciences, wants to contribute to pursue and restore Japanese human wisdom underlying the aforementioned social issues.
The students at this school must keep the significance of these matters in mind, deeply respect their teachers and elders, strictly observe the school rules, industriously study, and anticipate the day when their efforts bear fruit. Never be idle at anytime, day or night.
Based on the academic tradition of "Keiko Shokon," which means to learn the past in order to create the future, our university makes social contributions to take advantage of our local communities, formulates spiritually-affluent human relationships, and produces valuable educators and childcarers for the next generation. Our goals include preserving, inheriting, and developing traditions and cultures. Aiming toward the development of human resources that transmit messages to the world, we strive to improve our education that cultivates advanced capabilities to meet the issues that Japan faces today as well as a strong and rich mentality among our students.
Kogakkan University Library, based on our school philosophy, stores about 350,000 books related to each academic area of expertise and the field of general cultural science including Shinto studies together with characteristic classical books and precious documents. Among them are literary works and letters written by Motoori Norinaga, a scholar of the Japanese classics born in Mie. In addition, all the departments and research institutions have reference materials regarding their own academic fields. All of these library materials are electronically cataloged for the ease of searching.
To enhance and develop our educational activities, Kogakkan supports continuous improvement of educational activities. This center is a learning support office, where full-time teaching staff is assigned in order to provide a wide variety of learning consultations.
