Kurume University is established as Kyushu medical school in 1928, and it came into being with the establishment of the Faculty of Commerce.At present, it has developed as a comprehensive private university, and it consists of 6 faculties with 13 departments,5 graduate schools and 21 research centers.We have 2 campuses, 2 hospitals, high school and junior high school in Kurume city.

Kurume City, where our University is situated, is located in the vast plain region called the “Chikugo Plain” in the southern part of Fukuoka Prefecture in Kyushu. The City sits as if embraced by the “Chikugo River”, the largest river in Kyushu and one of the three wildest rivers in Japan. It is a beautiful town suitable for research and study. Kurume University has two campuses in Kurume City.
The Asahi-machi Campus is older and is situated on the south bank of the Chikugo River. This campus houses the Graduate School of Medicine, School of Medicine, University Hospital, School of Medical Technology and 9 research centers.
The Mii Campus is located in Mii-machi in the eastern part of Kurume City, and houses five faculties (Literature, Human Health, Law, Economics, Commerce), three graduate schools (Comparative Studies of International Culture and Societies, Psychology, Business Administration) and 11 research centers.
The Kurume University Medical Center affiliated with the Kurume University School of Medicine was founded in July 1994 for the purpose of providing advanced medical service for people in the community. Located in Kokubu-machi, in the eastern part of Kurume city, the center is equipped with modern medical facilities.
The center, which first consisted of 14 clinical departments and a total of 100 beds, has been growing year by year reaching of 17 clinical departments and a total of 300 beds in 1996. In close cooperation with Kurume University Hospital, the center aims to offer highly specialized medical service.
The Kurume University Rehabilitation Center, located in the Kurume University Medical Center at Kokubu-machi, Kurume city, was established in April 1998 with the latest computerized rehabilitation facilities. The center was founded in order to provide the appropriate rehabilitation treatment for disabled patients who are treated at both Kurume University Hospital and the Medical Center. The rehabilitation center plays an important role as an educational and instructive rehabilitation center for other rehabilitation establishments in the southern area of Fukuoka prefecture. The rehabilitation center is also widely known as a leader of rehabilitation biomechanics of musculoskeletal disorders.
The rehabilitation center’s mission is to meet not just the physical, but also the mental, psychological, social and vocational needs of patients who have suffered disabling conditions as the result of a severe accident or illness. The rehabilitation center also helps patients to build a belief in themselves that they can still make a mark on this world despite their disabilities, thereby helping them to build a bridge towards independence.
The Kurume University Medical Library was constructed with 2,830 square meters of floor space in a three-story building on the Asahi-machi campus in 1967. The library houses about 113,000 volumes and 122,000 current medical journals.
The original library was severely damaged by a disastrous flood when the Chikugo River overflowed its banks in 1953. Great contributions from faculty members and alumni, and also gifts from many sources outside the University permitted complete re-establishment. The library is always reforming itself to meet the needs of medical students and researchers.
