Japan"s traditional culture and Buddhism cultivate spirituality as a foundation, and within the sphere of this activity creativity is nurtured. This is the educational philosophy of our university. The area around Arashiyama is rich in cultural inheritance and blessed with tourism resources. With roots connected to Daikakuji Temple, Saga Art Junior College was opened as a two-year college in 19...71. In April 2001, Kyoto Saga University of Arts was established. At the same time, the Junior College developed into the faculty of Junior College.
The Institution provides a modern higher education based on the spiritual legacies of founder of Daikakuji Temple, the Emperor Saga, and the Great Buddhist Teacher and founder of the sect, Kobo Daishi. It fosters creativity and character in its students through a broad artistic education, and encourages them to help realize a rich and peaceful society.
Located in the Sagano area of the internationally renowned cultural city of Kyoto, we have established a firm foothold on art education here, amidst an environment in which the harmony of nature and culture can be felt. We aim at producing imaginative artists and cultural designers with finely-tuned sensibilities, who are able not only to contribute to the development of artistic culture of their own country, but who will also actively apply their knowledge and skills within the international community. To this end we have founded KYOTO SAGA UNIVERSITY OF ARTS GRADUATE SCHOOL, KYOTO SAGA UNIVERSITY OF ARTS, and KYOTO SAGA ART COLLEGE.
A broad and flexible sensitivity; a rich and profound sense of beauty; a distinct and irreplaceable individuality.

  • We work for the harmony of tradition and innovation in the field of art and culture.
  • We are rooted in the local community and try to contribute to its development.

The Type of Human Resources We Try to Foster:

  • Those who make full use of state-of-the-art technology and break fresh ground in the field of artistic expression.
  • Those who plan and design a rich and cultural living environment from a comprehensive point of view.
  • Those who can contribute to the development of society through renovation and activation of local culture.

There exits a lot of beauty in human history. To gain an interest in creativity, and to encourage student"s original works of art, we exhibit many things. With respect to the students of the Art Faculty, the museum is a place where they can get experience and qualifications to become a curator. We have about 120,000 books and around 900 kinds of periodicals focusing on art, design, and tourism. The library stores many important books and data, and has an audio-visual room where you can view the newest data. There is also Internet access in our free use computer room. All of these things play a role in supporting your education and research.
