The university was established in 1888 under the name, Nara Normal School for Teachers, and has continued providing education for over 120 years with its name changing to Nara University of Education along the way.
The university, where we study and instruct theoretics of arts and science as well as its application, aims at developing cultivated human resources of high intelligence, espec...ially competent advancement of characteristic culture in Nara.
The standard of education for overseas students in this institution has also gained a strong reputation due to its excellent educational content that exploits the special features of the ancient city of Nara.
In particular, those overseas students of Japanese language and culture are especially privileged as their campus and dormitory are located close to the center of Nara City, making it convenient for them to access both the traditional and modern cultures of Japan. For example, they are able to visit designated national treasure shrines, temples and statues on a daily basis in Nara, with those of Kyoto, another ancient city, not a great distance away too. Alternatively, there are many modern attractions of Osaka to discover just a 30-minute train ride away.
In Nara University of Education, there are approximately 110 teachers in 12 specialized areas, engaged in teaching and research. These 12 areas are: school education, Japanese language education, social studies education, mathematics education, science education, music education, fine arts education, health and sports science education, technology education, home economics education, English language education, and professional development of teachers.
Nara University of Education is located in the center of the ancient capital, Nara, and is surrounded by an abundance of nature and a number of traditional cultural properties, including world heritage sites. Taking advantage of this, this university offers a variety of opportunities to deepen one"s understanding, through experiencing the beautiful natural environment and cultural properties exclusive to Nara. For example, the university actively promotes exchanges with the nearby Nara National Museum. Through experiences such as this, students can come to have a real understanding of "internationalization" and Japanese traditional culture and relay this information to the world.
The International Student House provides both a study and living environment for Japanese male students and foreign students of Nara University of Education. The south wing and the north wing were constructed between September 1993 and March 1994 for the purpose of education, research and promotion of international exchange.
This house has 40 single rooms for foreign students, with regular curriculum students being allowed to stay here up to 2 years. Research students who enter directly from overseas and those who have to relocate from another place in Japan to commute the university, are allowed to stay here for up to 6 months. Once these time limits have been reached, students have to leave the house. The lodging fee per month is about 20,000 yen including the cost of utilities.
