Our university aims at producing people with ambition, who are moved by the hardships of these troubled times and compelled by a spirit of benevolence, mercy, and fraternity, to undertake the reform and advancement of society. To attain such a goal, mere scholarly pursuits or the desire for self-advancement would not be sufficient. Our university must be devoted to academic tradition and driven... by a passionate love of humanity.
Nihon Fukushi University is a university of social welfare deeply rooted in the local community with global aspirations. The university has 8 faculties and 4 graduate schools across 4 campuses, striving to nurture welfare professionals supporting happy lives for all people from a wide range of fields such as “health and medical services”, “welfare and economics”, and “education and growth”.
There is a reason why we use the hiragana characters instead of the conventionally-used kanji characters for the word fukushi (welfare) when we describe ourselves as a university of social welfare. While both kanji characters in originally mean “happiness” when used individually, the term tends to be narrowly perceived to refer to socially vulnerable people. However, as the scope of welfare has expanded and the society is now required to ensure the realization of “normal” “living” and the “happiness” that comes with it for “everyone”, the university uses the expression to signify its dedication to the cause.
The Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture where the three campuses with faculties are located in is known as “the most energetic peninsula in Japan” as it is an area rich in nature, with frequent industrial, community and nonprofit activities. At each faculty, in addition to lectures on campus and learning in seminars, emphasis is also placed on field work that allows students to visit the local communities and learn practical skills from the local residents and organizations.
At Nihon Fukushi University, we look forward to seeing the enrolment of students with the desire to support the happiness of people and contribute to the future development of society by learning the knowledge, skills and spirit of “welfare” through practical and hands-on experiences with the regional community.
Among those universities offering four-year courses and specializing in social welfare, Nihon Fukushi University and the Faculty of Social Welfare have the longest history, with the 2017 academic year celebrating the 60th anniversary of its foundation. In commemoration of this, the Faculty of Sports Science was newly established on the Mihama campus, improving not only the educational facilities where health and sports training and seminars can be carried out, but also the sports environment as official matches can now be played. 4 special courses and a scholarship entrance exam system were also implemented for the Faculty of Social Welfare. In the 2015 academic year, the Tokai campus, our third campus in the Chita Peninsula, was newly created by establishing the Faculty of Nursing and relocating the Faculty of Economics and Faculty of International Welfare Development from the Mihama campus. In addition, satellite campuses have been opened in Tokyo (Shimbashi) and Osaka (Nishikujo), where practical training and employment support can be provided for undergraduate students, and correspondence courses and graduate school classes can be conducted.
We now total 8 faculties, 10 departments, and 4 graduate programs, with some 12,000 undergraduates and postgraduates spread over the Nagoya graduate school campus and university campuses in the northern (Tokai City), central (Handa City), and southern (Mihama Town) areas of the Chita Peninsula, along with satellite campuses in Tokyo and Osaka.
With each campus as a core, the university takes on two roles: one being a Center of Community (COC) building a vibrant regional community and providing chi (knowledge) in the region to promote and enrich welfare, medical care, industry and technology by making the best use of its unique cultural and natural assets; and the other being a Center of Excellence (COE), an outstanding global base of chi (knowledge) building a compassionate welfare society. The Chita Peninsula, a truly “Glocal” (global and local) area with good land, sea and an airport, is an environmental museum with a blend of industry, culture and nature; a real treasure trove of chi (knowledge). This area offers optimal conditions for practical learning that takes global and regional changes into consideration. With this rich area as a base, we sincerely hope our students can refine these two kinds of chi (knowledge and community) and become self-motivated, innovative and well-rounded fukushi specialists with the world at their feet.
