Our university, Tokyo University of Science Suwa (TUSS), was founded in 2002 as a daughter branch of Tokyo University of Science (TUS), which is the largest science oriented university in Japan with a long history of more than 130 years. We are located on the foot of the mount Yatsugatake, whose broad beautiful view we can enjoy season to season from our campus.
Education and research of ...TUSS possesses three features. The first is that TUSS is a “small” university belonging to a family of a “large” one TUS. Accordingly, our education and research are conducted on a firm basis of the mother university TUS, while face to face education can be given with the advantage of its small size.
The second feature is “synergy education” of technology and management. This Suwa district is well known as a focal area of small and medium enterprise (SME) for precision manufacturing. Accordingly, our education is so designed to provide students of technology with background of management and those of management with that of technology. In addition, many SME’s in this surrounding region are expanding their activity around the world, the so called globalization. In response to this trend, we are putting more emphasis on the education of the global aspect and foreign languages, and also offering students a course of foreign internship in collaboration with local industries.
The third one is pioneering research works reflecting the high research activity of the mother university TUS. Our research covers areas directly concerned with industries in this district such as environment and renewable energy, robotics, digital media, communication technology, and business management.
We cultivate the talents and competencies in people who seek to pioneer their own future, and give them the education necessary to respond to rapidly developing scientific technologies. As a regional university we aim to contribute to the local community to promote cooperation among government, industry and academia, to nurture a generation of new industries and technologies, and to encourage innovative management practices.
In addition to producing individuals with a high level of expertise, we aim to nurture the drive in our students to attain the knowledge, methodology, and skills needed to respond to societal changes and the challenges for tomorrow. With a firm understanding of the technology and ethical viewpoints involved in information and communication technologies and the importance of environmental conservation, we train people who are able to create solutions to the challenges of today’s information society and innovate products in the 21st century. Graduates from this university acquire a high level of favorable and practical skills that make them employees who are sought-after by companies and businesses.
Rather than treating the fields of engineering and management as separate we endeavor to impart an understanding of the relationships, views and knowledge of both fields. We want to produce scientists/engineers who are able to understand their relationship to the business society and specialists and to grasp the characteristics of technologies and scientific/engineering ethics. To be specific, we encourage this through functions where faculty and students from four departments Yes mixed at freshman seminars, engineering and management course, and synergetic active learning seminar, as well as associated special subjects from different faculties.
In order to cultivate a synthesis of knowledge, skills and ethics, studies in information literacy and environmental awareness are both included as a basis for general and specialized education. In a systematic way, students are explored to acquire issues that occur within the existent relationships of scientific technology and business practices and management.
It is essential to provide students with broad yet high-level abilities, attitudes and habits that form the basis of their major. These aptitudes will serve them in the post-graduate world where one must acquire further skills and knowledge on one’s own. We start by creating a strong foundation for different fields of study, and then design curricular aimed at generating the best possible educational results for those specializations.
Abilities such as clear communication, self-expression, problem identification and solution, and a desire for learning are enhanced and reinforced by the refining of knowledge and skill. These abilities also form the foundation of self-determined effort after graduation.
As students’ paths lead them to attend talks, seminars, experiments, and thesis research, their study tends to evolve from memorization towards a thinking type of education where they can appreciate the ‘joy of knowledge and creation’ and the ‘joy of creation’ in their own learning. We emphasize small class sizes and interactive learning in order to develop their ability to respond to the challenges and changes of the times.
