Tsurumi University traces its origin to Tsurumi Girls’ High School , established in 1925 to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the death of the great Zen master, Keizan. Keizan founded Soji-ji Temple, the parent temple of Tsurumi University, and one of the two head temples of the Soto-Shu Buddhist sect.
Daihonzan Soji-ji is one of the two head temples of Soto Zen Buddhism. Soto Zen Bu...ddhism is distinguished by its focus on the down-to-earth practice of “Everyday Zen.”It encourages understanding of the workings of one’s own mind as a means to live with a Zen awareness in all aspects of daily life – on campus, at work, and in the community.
We aim to develop individuals who seek truth, offer kindness and sympathy to others, and move continually forward to develop character and intellect. At the same time, we encourage social involvement and investment in local communities. Our desire is for all graduates to both master their field and become community leaders.
We are now preparing an exciting college experience for all our students and propose to bring out the unique qualities of each individual at Tsurumi University.
Today, Tsurumi University is comprised of the School of Dental Medicine (six-year program),the School of Literature (four-year program), and Tsurumi Junior College (two-year program for the Department of Early Childhood Care and Education and three-year program for the Depar tment of Dental Hygiene). Graduate programs are available in both the School of Dental Medicine and the School of Literature.
Tsurumi University is founded on the philosophy and teachings of Keizan, who emphasized “Awakening Buddhahood and thanks to all beings.”
At Tsurumi University, there are 498 faculty members for a student population of 3099 (2014 data). This high ratio of teachers to students provides an excellent educational environment for students and stands in contrast to otheruniversities in the area.
Tsurumi University is located near the border between the international cities of Yokohama and Kawasaki, and with close proximity to Tokyo This convenient urban location offers numerous cultural, dining, and entertainment options for students and families alike. Several train and bus lines provide easy access to our campus (JR Keihin-Tohoku Line; Keikyu Line; and Tsurumi Municipal Bus System).
The Tsurumi University campus occupies 450,000 square meters and is covered in flowers and trees. The park-like atmosphere, coupled with the close proximity to the spacious Soji-ji Temple grounds, make our campus an oasis of green in the surrounding urban landscape. Thanks to this peaceful, relaxing environment, Tsurumi University is the ideal environment for study. We strive to foster graduates with an international outlook as well as the compassionate human qualities that our founding Buddhist fathers envisioned.
The Tsurumi University Library is wellknown in Japan for its collection of over 800,000 books, including a large number of rare volumes that can be found only here. Ranked in the top 10 of Japanese university libraries, researchers from all over Japan are attracted to its unique collection of resources. The library is staffed by specialists familiar with the library’s rare collections who are on hand to assist with advanced research. A number of students cite the library facilities as their main reason for pursuing advanced academic studies at Tsurumi University. Students and teachers are frequent visitors to the library thanks to the precious books and documents that serve as learning materials, and to the multimedia facilities that enhance the university’s reputation as a leader in information science. Precious and rare items are periodically on exhibit, and Open Library events are well-known in the community and among high school students. The library is also a place of relaxation for students who come to enjoy the large collection of DVDs and music CDs in their free time.
