The University of Marketing and Distribution Sciences (UMDS) aims to facilitate the comprehensive and scientific study of distribution, as the one and only university in the world.UMDS opened its doors in 1988. Since that time we have been seeking individuals who are motivated and are able to speak their opinions to anyone in any situation.
Isao Nakauchi, the founding president of UMDS, k...new that “distribution” would be a big part of our society in the 21st century. This is what drove him to build the university in 1979. He knew that we were no longer able to think solely about benefiting Japan, but we needed to think about every customer in the world. As the world changes day by day, the needs of customers change quickly, therefore the suppliers / distributors need to provide products and services in the right time and at the right places. Today, distribution is not simply a word used to describe a route between suppliers and customers, it is more broadly understood as a means by which to provide and offer a better life for customers. However, when UMDS was first opened, there were no schools focused on scientific “distribution”. Mr. Nakauchi decided to build this university because he knew he wanted to encourage and support the “power of youthful energy”.
What contributes to enriching the current society is the sophisticated and highly efficient "distribution" of people, money, information, services and other products. At UMDS, in the course of studying the current distribution mechanisms of society, our students are expected to take on new challenges and get a wide variety of social experiences. They are also encouraged to individually find, analyze and solve problems so that they can acquire management abilities to create new ideas in the future. It is an important mission of UMDS to provide students with independent learning opportunities and help them recognize the value of it.
First-year students may not know the potential of "self-awareness." If they clearly become aware of the kind of job after graduation, the qualifications, the proficiency level, and the skills needed to get the job, and what they should learn during their four years of university studies, then they will become proactive, independent learners and become motivated to realize their goals.
With this in mind, as part of efforts to develop its educational programs for first-year students, UMDS has introduced the "self-discovery curriculum" since the academic year of 2015. This curriculum is designed to boost each student"s self-awareness and encourage independent learning so they can develop into what they want to be.
UMDS will remain committed to fostering motivated individuals who are not easily overwhelmed or controlled by the surrounding circumstances but are capable of managing their future to achieve their goals and contributing to the better society.
UMDS provides a variety of international activities for students who wish to work globally. Borderless learning about distribution and marketing will instill an international perspective and will help students in their global business futures.
About 250 international students (Chinese, Korean, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, Saudi Arabian and others) study at UMDS. Workshops and parties are offered for domestic and international students to be able to meet and communicate. Some student staffs also organize events with international students to promote multiculturalism on campus.
