CAS Sohar is a public college that offers a range of programs in the field of Applied Sciences. The college, as planned one of the MOHE s Centres of Excellence, awards degrees in Design and in Information Technology.
College of Applied Sciences – Sohar is one of the six colleges under the Ministry of Higher Education, established in 1990, and located in the city of Sohar in the Governor...ate of North Albatinah. The vision of the colleges lies in playing a vital role in presenting Oman to the world as a developing nation reflected in contributing to the field of applied sciences, and in the development of the knowledge community to what confirms with the Omani cultural norms.
The mission of the college lies in creating and imparting knowledge through collaboration, career guidance, and the intensive cooperation with students, the local community and the labor market in order to create the supportive environment that would reflect in the development of Oman in the global arena.
The college grants bachelor degrees in Engineering, in the following minors: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. The college also grants bachelor degrees in Information Technology, in the following minors: Software Development, Database Management, Networking, and Security. The dean of the college undertakes managing the academic, administrative and financial responsibilities in the college to what parallels and confirms with the basic laws and regulations of the colleges and what is indicated therein, and he is assisted in carrying out the mission by the two deputy deans.
There is a college council, and it undertakes many responsibilities and privileges, some of which are: executing study plans and curriculums, maintaining the progress of study, and inter-departmental arrangements, along with some other responsibilities.
The college has four academic departments: the Engineering Department, the IT Department, English Language Department, and the General Requirements Department. There is also an intra-departmental council in each of these departments that undertakes a number of responsibilities and duties related to academic aspects.Furthermore, the college has a department for the financial and administrative affairs, with its divisions, and it includes within four supporting academic centers, which are: the LRC, the Registration Department, Students’ Services Center, and the Career Training and Guidance Center. This cohort combines the seventh batch of graduates majoring in Information Technology and the first batch majoring in Engineering. It is, therefore, their fair right to feel proud standing on the graduation platform at the college that has hosted them for the past five years. It is this same institution that has joined them with their peers on classroom seats, and introduced them to their devoted teachers and supervisors. This memory will long last as one of the most profound stages of their lives. It will be the part of the memory that reminds them and us of the learning experience as well as the substantial journey towards development on this blessed piece of land.
Oman, this land, has offered so much to its sons on the hopes that the day will come when these young minds work together to build this land’s present and future. These aspiring souls are still alive and fueling on the far-reaching Omani history using the same limited but determined hands to secure their daily needs. These hands were put together to plow lands and channel water through steep mountains in order to spread life. The same hands grew palm trees to provide food and altered their wasted parts into daily used tools. The same hands went on and built entire homes out of clay and palm tree branches establishing a system of self-sufficiency for hundreds of years. And driven by the desire to communicate with the world around him, the Omani citizen made his boat out of branches, drove it into water and harnessed the sea wonders. He stood on the ocean’s shore aspiring to communicate with the worlds’ civilizations to exchange human’s experience. This is what the Omani has always been characterized with, a determination that knows no boredom, and relentless endeavor.Hope is now in your hands dear graduates. It is our hope that you recognize the size of the responsibility placed in your hands and carry on the legacy that led us here.
Students admitted into the foundation programme of the colleges of Applied Sciences are required to sit for an English placement test at the beginning of the first semester which is carried out in the Orientation week of the Autumn Semester. They will be streamed into four levels (A, B, C, and D) in light of their performance on the test. Streaming is helpful in determining students skills that require improvement and also in shaping the extra-curricular activities and teaching methods used each level.
The Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) degree is a 4 year 128 credit hour program taught in English, designed to produce graduates who are competent in their major disciplines, as well as IT in general; graduates who are ready to be involved in the development of Omani industry. As the name "Colleges of Applied Sciences" suggests, our students are exposed to significant practical work and, where possible, linkages with Omani industry are being developed and exploited. The BIT is offered in the CAS campuses of Sohar, Ibri, Rustaq, Sur, and Salalah.
The BIT program contains a core of main stream IT courses which expose our graduates to the concepts and topics about which all who work in the IT field should be familiar. Typically, web design and development; software design and implementation; information systems analysis and design; operating systems; networks; database; IT security; professional ethics; and such analytical courses as discrete mathematics and data structures. IT is a fast moving field however, and so space has been left in the program which can be filled with the innovations of the time; ensuring our graduates are aware of the latest IT trends. Presently the four majors of the BIT are Software Development, Data Management, IT Security, and Networks. The majors permit our students to explore their chosen field in greater depth with the addition of highly focused and specialised courses.
