Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University Larkana was allowed to be established by Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto on 18th October 2008, taking into consideration the future of the higher medical education and improvement in the quality medical care in this part of Sindh. Conforming to the vision of its founder, this University is committed to counter the growing demand of the people for the q...uality medical education, specialized training, high quality health care and promotion of medical research in this part of Pakistan. It is essential that university shall nurture the ambience of mutual trust and confidence that assures to regulatory authorities and other stakeholders that medical education and structured training with transparent assessment produces the doctors equipped with appropriate scientific knowledge, adequate clinical skill, respect to local values, suitable behavior with sustainable urge for life long learning.
The University has set the objectives to develop implement and evaluate the curricula in various disciplines of medicine in undergraduate and post graduate programs to respond appropriately and proportionally to changing paradigms of medical practice in our society.
Five year course leading to MBBS is offered by its constituent Colleges in Chandka medical college Larkana and Ghulam Muhammad Mahar medical college Sukkar. The approach is to integrate sufficient knowledge of basic sciences with clinical training in attached teaching hospitals to achieve above mentioned goals.
Teaching faculties of Basic and Clinical Sciences prepare students to acquire the competence to become not only safe and sound Medical Professionals but facilitate them on better communication and lifelong learning with analytical abilities and critical thinking. Along with MBBS and four years training in dentistry leading to BDS, the University has established the Institute of Nursing which has admitted its second batch of students. Promotion of postgraduate medical education is very important function; the university offers diploma and degree courses in the basic and clinical disciplines keeping eye on the global standards the national and local health care objectives are fulfilled.
SMBBMU has launched the Institute for the development of Basic Sciences to meet the growing needs of trained Personnel now and in future, In collaboration with HEC we provide PhD scholarships to suitable aspirants to meet the acute shortage of the trained faculty and develop the human resource for the future of this institute.
Along with Annual Symposia, Seminars, Conferences and other academic activities, the University regularly organizes workshops in collaboration with other universities for capacity building of the faculty in research, medical education methodology and assessment skills to cope with the changing trends in medical training. University provides library with book lending, reference room and cozy reading room facilities. PERN network in association with higher education commission is provided with all facilities to promote research and education.
The university collaborates with W.H.O for vocational training in skill labs to general practitioners, health workers and persons involved with reproductive and pediatrics health to develop competency to reduce maternal and infant mortality rate. On the recommendation of the concerned faculty necessary changes will be done in the curriculum in the final year of MBBS to learn these skills as the part of the regular training and move toward achieving millennium development goals. SMBBUL operates FM radio covering wide areas in Larkana suburbs to run health program in Sindhi language to spread health awareness, importance of prevention of diseases, appropriate nutrition and vaccination along with providing entertainment to masses.
SMBBUL plans to develop linkages in various disciplines with other universities undergraduate, postgraduate institutes in Pakistan and abroad to strengthen the weak areas and benefit by exchange of Faculty to develop expertise for assuring the quality enhancement by improving the standards and defining the outcomes in education and training.
Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University Larkana should become the bastion of academic excellence and seat of learning and properly practicing the Science and art of medicine to protect and promote health and safety of the people.
