The history of Wroclaw Medical University dates back to 1811, when the Prussian king Frederik Wilhelm II ordered to relocate the Viadrina University in Frankfurt to Wroclaw. Its new rector, professor and doctor Karl August Wilhelm Bereds, was also named the first Dean of the Medical Faculty on the University of Wroclaw. The faculty had five cathedrals: anatomy, physiology, internal medicine, ob...stetrics and surgery. Thanks to the quality of didactics and its renowned professors, the Medical Faculty of The University Of Wroclaw quickly established itself as a renowned European medical school.
The Faculty of Medicine is the oldest and the largest faculty of Wroclaw Medical University. It was established on November 14, 1945, as one of six faculties of the University of Wroclaw and Technical University. The opening lecture was given by Ludwik Hirszfeld. The scientific staff consisted mainly of professors from the Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv. The Wroclaw Medical University was established in 1950, consisting of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy. Since then, 16,068 medical doctors and 4,715 dentists have graduated. On February 12, 1958, the first open heart surgery in Poland was carried out by prof. Wiktor Bross at the Faculty of Medicine, who also on March 31, 1966 performed the first kidney transplant from a living donor. These achievements were significant in European medicine. A great number of prominent scientists conducted research at the Faculty of Medicine, including the following professors: Ludwik Hirszfeld, Zygmunt Albert, Edward Szczeklik, Witold Orłowski, Stefan Ślopek, Hugon and Zofia Kowarzyk.
Our strengths consist of dynamic growth, openness to change and a friendly attitude towards students. The traditions of this Faculty, which recently has celebrated its 70th anniversary, combined with the present world-class research projects inspire its continuous growth, also in the English Division studies.
The Dentistry Unit was established at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Wroclaw and Technical University in Wroclaw on April 13, 1947. In 1950, the school of dentistry became a part of the Wroclaw Medical University. The school consisted of four departments. In 1970–1980, academic dentistry in Wroclaw functioned as the Institute of Dentistry. In December 1981, the school of dentistry was reunited with the Faculty of Medicine. The Faculty of Dentistry was established on November 16, 2000. Prominent Polish scientists conducted research in dentistry in Wrocław, including the following professors: Noemi Wigdorowicz-Makowerowa, Tadeusz Owiński, Adam Masztalerz, Stanisław Potoczek, Bogumił Płonka, Tadeusz Pawela, Ignacy Pietrzycki and many others. In 2003–2006, the scientific and training facilities were moved to a new building. The Faculty regained the right to issue degrees in dental medicine (in the last three years the Faculty has granted 26 degrees). The Faculty, as one of five in Poland, has received the longest possible accreditation from the State Accreditation Committee. Today, it is one of three independent faculties of dentistry in Poland.
Our faculty is traditionally the most demanding division of the Wroclaw Medical University – in the last recruitment 30 candidates applied for one spot. Thanks to the high quality of lectures and well-equipped surgeries, all of our students are highly competitive on the job market.
