Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod (UNN) was founded in 1916 as People’s University of Russia. On January 30 (January 17 in the old calendar) we celebrate our Foundation Day. Our university was the first higher education institution in Nizhny Novgorod. After the merger with Polytechnic Institute evacuated from Warsaw, the University was given a status of ‘State University’. T...hus UNN became the first university established in the Soviet state. The University has over 30,000 students including approximately 1000 postgraduate (Ph.D.) and postdoctoral students. At the University of Nizhni Novgorod, academic education is based on research.
UNN is one of the top classical universities in Russia. As an innovative university, the University of Nizhni Novgorod provides high-quality research-based education in a broad range of academic disciplines. The combination of high educational quality and accessibility of education due to a great variety of academic programmes and forms of training is a distinctive feature of the University. UNN will rank among the top 300 universities in the world. UNN will function on the basis of the concept of the "knowledge triangle" - its triune function of education, science and innovation. The decisive competitive advantage of UNN-2020 among the institutions participating in the development of innovative knowledge society will be the training of highly qualified and creative professionals possessing the qualities of innovators and entrepreneurs.
UNN will become a major university in terms of the number of students and academic staff. To achieve this, UNN is open to consolidation of research and educational institutions in the Nizhni Novgorod region. UNN develops a system of branch campuses in the cities of the industrial belt of Nizhni Novgorod. UNN will be a university with the developed innovation infrastructure. UNN will continue active cooperation with companies, including large state-owned ones, through contract research and commercialization of research results. The University will be the founder of a large number of effectively operating small innovative enterprises. UNN is implementing a program to develop the growth zone for medical equipment development and biomedical high technologies.
UNN will be a University, which provides training for the teaching staff at all levels of secondary and higher education. University graduates will be ready to teach in secondary and higher education institutions using modern approaches based on active and e-learning methods. UNN-2020 will be a socially responsible university. Community service and civic education of students will remain the University’s priorities.
UNN will be a global university. Research and innovation results, as well as study programs at UNN will be in high demand not only in Russia but also abroad.
