St Petersburg State University has been committed to advancing science and training highly qualified professionals. The University dates back to 1724, when Peter the Great founded the Academy of Sciences and Arts as well as the first Academic University and the university preparatory school in Russia.

The University is fully-equipped to provide a diverse range of opportunities for education, research, and creativity: the richest Research Library named after Maksim Gorky, a comprehensive digital collection of scholarly editions, a state-of-the-art Research Park, laboratories headed by leading scientists, museums, a publishing house, sports clubs, a University choir, orchestras, drama and dance studios, and many more. St Petersburg is famous the world over for its University. St Petersburg University is not a campus university, so it is not all located on one site. It is made up of many different buildings located around Vasilievskii Island, Central district, Admiralty district, and Petergof. Many of them are unique architectural monuments, say, Mikhailovskaia Dacha and Bobrinski’s Palace, that are harmonious in combining history and modernity. The Twelve Collegia, as the main building of the University, demonstrate a notable example of Peter the Great’s architectural period and was built Domenico Trezzini and А. F. Shchedrin in the 18th century. Initially, it was a place for the Russian government: Senate, Synod, and collegia. In 1838, it was commissioned to the University. Since it has been housing offices, Gorky Research Library, resource centres and laboratories of the Research Park. It is also a place where we hold important events: ceremonies, concerts, conferences, and meetings with famous people and those who come to visit the University.
SPbU accepts more than 3000 international students annually on various degree and non-degree programmes. SPbU has more than 400 partner universities in about 70 countries - China, Germany, USA, France, Finland, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Brazil. More than 25 international summer and winter schools are held at SPbU annually. SPbU is a member of a number of international associations and student exchange programmes and internships: Erasmus Mundus, Erasmus+, Finnish-Russian Cross Border University, Finnish-Russian Student Exchange Program, Santander Universities, TEMPUS, and many others.
SPbU has long-term cooperation agreements with IBM, Carl Zeiss, Microsoft, Leica, Sun Microsystems, Intel, Adobe and many other leading international companies. There are many sports leagues at SPbU, so each student can either engage in his or her favourite sport or choose a new one: football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, chess, rugby, mountaineering, mountain skiing, orienteering, swimming, skiing, mountain biking, aerobics, boxing, wrestling and rowing. Student teams participate in international competitions and often win them. Socially minded students join different organisations: SPbU Students’ Trade Union, the Center for Student Initiatives, the Career Center, the International Students’ Club, various creative teams and scientific societies. Students play intellectual games, publish newspapers and magazines, become volunteers and entrepreneurs. There is a great number of teams for creative students at SPbU. Some of them have already achieved national and even international recognition. These include a student choir, a youth chamber orchestra, a drama studio, a vocal studio and a Russian folk instruments orchestra.
