It began as a regional education hub founded with the support of residents, and quickly gained a strong reputation as the best university south of Seoul. On July 18, Leiden University of the Netherlands released its 2017 annual global university ranking report. The Leiden Ranking, which does not use institutional reputation as an evaluation criterion, is based exclusively on bibliometric indicators, i.e. the number of academic papers published and the frequency in which those papers are quoted by other researchers. The results for KNU are based on data from 2012 to 2016 as provided by the academic information service company Thomson Reuters. According to this year’s report, which includes co-authored papers from Universities that have published over 5,000 volumes, KNU has increased its number of papers to 7,171 volumes, an increase of 436 volumes from the previous report. Among the Universities who have published over 1,000 volumes in the medico-biological and health science fields, KNU ranked highly with 1,447 volumes, 105 volumes more than the previous report. Overall, in terms of impact (quantified by the number of academic citations given to published papers) KNU ranks 386th in the world, 67th in Asia and 8th in Korea. KNU ranks 1st in Korea in the medico-biological and health science fields. Such results, it can be said, confirm KNU’s competitiveness in world-class research.
CK-1 is a representative federal funding project, with funding is given for five years, from 2014 to 2018, in special academic areas in universities. 2016 marked the third year of the project, and a re-selection process was done to provide opportunities for new projects and maintain best practice within existing projects. At the re-selection process, 89 projects out of 492 among 58 universities(62 new and 27 existing) were selected, marking a 5.5:1 competition rate. KNU has consistently received top evaluationssince 2014, including the interim evaluation in May 2016 and the re-selection process in last July. Among the re-selected projects are the ‘Smart Electronic Specialized Project’, ‘Future Industrial Material Project’, ‘Global Food Resources Agricultural Development Talent Nurturing Project’, ‘Horticultural Food Convergence “Glocal ”Talent Nurturing Project, “Glocal ” Culture Contents Creative Talents Project’, and ‘Basic Science Talent Nurturing Project’. KNU is planning to consistently develop and support specialized academic areas for more balanced development.
KNU has been selected for the Program for Industrial needs-Matched Education (PRIME) project by the Korean Ministry of Education after being selected for CORE project last March. The PRIMEprogram will provide from fivebillion won to as much as 30 billion won to departments which merge with other departments or move students to academic areaswhich receive moredemand from industry. Out of 72 universities, 9 wereselected as participants in large-sizedprojects(social demand leading university) and 12 forsmall-sized projects (creativity-based leading university) including KNU. KNU is the only local flagship university selected for the program. KNU has a plan to move some100 students out of 225 in the humanities and social division the undeclared major category to the newly established Global SoftwareConvergence department. As rapid growth in the ICT industry is expected in the nextfive years, KNU will do its best to nurture talentin the IT area.
CORE (an initiative for COllege of Humanities Research and Education) is a Ministry of Education funding program which aims to strengthenstudent capabilitiesin liberal arts as a fundamental academic area. Out of 46 applicants, 16 programs were selected, including one at KNU. In order to be selected, KNU formed three programmodels includinga “Global Local studies model”;a “Converged major model”focusingon liberal arts; and an “In-depth Basic Liberal Arts model”. These models centeron six major competencies including global competencies, convergence, creativity, supremacy, leadership, and commitment. 100% of faculty and staff members in KNU colleges related to liberal arts are to participate in the program, and all participating students will be required to take eight credits in basic liberal arts courses.
