Suranaree University of Technology has aspired to being a moderated size university that is recognized worldwide, with vigorous in basic science research. In this respect, it has founded the centers of excellence in many areas, most notable of which are those specializing in Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Agriculture and Health Science, and Engineering etc. There is, accordingly, key materialized research, such as, advanced material research, fundamental and theoretical scientific research, advanced renewable energy development and energy preservation, and health science research.
Moreover, the university aims to adapt, transfer and develop technology as well as a body of knowledge, as it has declared itself as the “societycompanion institution.” Its substantial mission accomplishment is that, in 2006, it was rated “Outstanding” in research and excellent in teaching in the ranking for Thai university potential in teaching and research assessment by the Office of the Commission on Higher Education (OCHE).
Owing to its strength in research, Suranaree University of Technology has been selected by The Office of the Commission on Higher Education to be 1 of the 9 “National Research Universities,” since 2010. It has become evident to both the society and academic community, nationally and internationally, that SUT carries out its missions on research according to the respective strategies, which include building the world class body of knowledge, efficient research management, good governance and objectively resolving national issues. This isachieved by executing the measures as follows.
Cooperative Education and Career Development combines classroom study with actual full-time work experience at companies as if the students were their employees throughout the course of 16 weeks. The main emphasis is placed on learning by doing or a special project that is beneficial to the company, for instance, efficiency improvement or process problem-solving.
This activity instills the students’ work and social skills as well as prepares them for their target professions, while equipping them with knowledge and skills that will attract more Interest from the labour market. In this regard, Suranaree University of Technology has maintained its position as the role model and leader in Thailand’s cooperative education. Moreover, it prepares students for exchange amongst ASEAN countries so as to open their opportunities to learn and obtain work in diverse cultures and environments, broadening their vision of the world.
