PSTU was founded in November 1930 as a professional training school. In 1933 it became Mariupol Metallurgical Institute. From 1948 until 1989 it was Zhdanov Metallurgical Institute. From 1989 – 1993 it again became Mariupol Metallurgical Institute. The Postgraduate Department was established in 1960. In 1993 PSTU received university status and became Pryazovskyi State Technical University. Si...nce 2009 its official name is State Higher Education Institution “Pryazovskyi State Technical University”.
It also incorporates 3 research institutes, 2 colleges, a Professional Education Lyceum , and two Technical Secondary Schools. PSTU provides In-Service Training and Continuous Education Institute and a Preparatory Department .
The university offers graduate and professional educational programs for students from the Azov Sea region, Ukraine and other countries. The student body includes about 11.000 students working towards bachelor, specialist and master degrees. The advanced degree programs are offered through the postgraduate department.
Today the faculty of the University is 500 teaching staff, including 46 professors with doctorates and about 229 docents with the degree of candidate of science. Among them are 50 full and affiliated members of various branch academies of sciences in Ukraine and abroad, 6 honored fellows of science and engineering, laureates of national prizes and honored workers in education of Ukraine.
Pryazovskyi State Technical University is implementing the European educational degree standards. This is a response to the innovative trends in higher educational systems in Europe, and is linked to joining the Bologna Process. This will enhance the mobility of both students and professors and contribute to one of the Bologna Process priorities, i.e. establishing recognition of diplomas across universities. Thus, newly trained graduates will have better opportunities in labour markets worldwide.
The university’s strategic plan for the future calls for generation, preservation, dissemination and application of knowledge and cultivation of arts to benefit the people of Mariupol, the nation and the global community.
International Strategy, which was developed by PSTU take University to 2020, which sets out our internationalisation objectives and is supported with developing the international capacity of our staff, enhancing our international dimension into research and academic activities.
“Internationalisation” is key to PSTU’s success and is embedded in everything we do. All Faculty, Department and staff have “international objectives” as part of their yearly appraisal process and personal development plans. There are many ways that staff, both professional services and academic, can support our International Strategy and help create truly “global graduates”. The University Complex Development Program has Internationalisation as one of its topic themes and outlines the following aims:
To develop the University internationally we will:

• do high quality, ground-breaking research in collaboration with industries and business operators;
• develop study programs that prepare students to succeed in the modern global economy;
• create opportunities for international mobility programs, for both students and academic staff;
• promote and publicize our strengths on the international stage.

This strategy aims to help PSTU achieve a deep-rooted international culture, and global impact in its work.
The strategy is designed to help us bring about measurable benefits for the University in a wide range of business areas, including:
