From offering evening classes to the local community, to teaching soldiers skills to help them find employment after the First World War, Bucks has been many things to many people. We recently celebrated our 125th anniversary and looked back on some remarkable achievements from over the years.
We may be proud of our heritage, but we’re excited about the future too. We’re working towar...ds a vision to create an environment where innovation, creativity and enterprise flourish. We’ve already developed a partnership to inspire students in emerging technology, and have plans in place to carry on making a real difference to people’s lives.
The origins of our University stretch back to 1891. Right from the start we specialised in vocational learning, and over the years we’ve gone from strength to strength. We’ve been transforming lives for more than 125 years. Take a look at our digital timeline to see some key events along the way. We want to make sure all our graduates have the skills and experiences to be able to succeed in today’s demanding and competitive world. That’s why we’ve invested more than £100 million in our facilities across our three campuses.
We’ve got some exciting plans to make Bucks an even more inspiring place to study. Our vision focuses on our education, our research and our people. And of course, our students will be at the heart of everything we do. Bucks New University was originally founded in 1891 as the School of Science and Art. Back then the School offered evening classes to people in the local area – and was initially funded with a tax on beer and spirits!
In the 20th century the School started to develop strong links with local crafts like furniture making and cabinetry. It was the beginning of our long association with furniture design and manufacture. After the Second World War the School expanded, and became known as the High Wycombe College of Art and Technology. High Wycombe became a centre for the furniture making industry and estimates say that around 80% of all the nation’s wooden chairs were made in the town during the 1960s.
In 1999 we were awarded University College status by the Government, and became known as Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College. It wasn’t until 2007 that we changed that to the snappier name of Buckinghamshire New University.Bucks New University aspires to be a leading UK University in applied, practice based and translational research and related advanced scholarship in our fields of professional, creative and translational practice. Our Applied Research and Enterprise work:
