We trace our history back to 1865, when the School of Art first opened in the Old Free Library in Cardiff. Cardiff Metropolitan University’s constitution has been​ drawn up under the Education Reform Act 1988 (as amended) which provides for the appointment of a Board of Governors with responsibility for the educational character and mission of the Institute and oversight of its activities. ​​​​​​​​​​​​
The Board of Governors has a​ duty to govern Cardiff Met​​​ropolitan University so as to achieve and develop its primary objectives of teaching, learning and research, and related activities. It is the Board’s function to consider and approve Cardiff Metropolitan University’s strategic plan, which sets Cardiff Metropolitan University’s academic aims and objectives, and to oversee the financial, physical and staffing strategies necessary to achieve it.
The University’s Management Board is the most senior executive decision-making body for matters relating to the management of the University. The Management Board is responsible for major decisions that impact on strategy and risk in the areas of: Finance; Estates and Facilities; Human Resources; Student Services; Marketing, Communications and Student Recruitment; and Library and Information Services.
The Freedom of Information Act 2000 and the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 are intended to help make the public sector more open and accountable by allowing members of the public to scrutinise the decisions they make and the services they provide.
