The University of Bath was established on Claverton Down in Bath in 1966. We are a campus university in the South West of England. Bath is only 1 hour and 25 minutes away from London by train. We offer courses in engineering, humanities, management, science and social science. We are a member of the Student Community Partnership, which is a forum to enable the local Council, University and Students" Union to work together. It"s been set up to promote excellent two-way relationships between local higher education students and other members of their local communities. Topics for discussion include accommodation, transport, welfare, community relations, community safety and environmental issues. we should remind ourselves that the strengths of our University community - our international outlook, the quality of our people, the excellence of our research and our academic programmes, and our robust financial status - are still what they were before the referendum result was announced. Whilst none of us yet know exactly how the implications of the referendum will unfold, it is important to remember that we are entering what may be a prolonged period of uncertainty but from a very strong position. Over the coming months and years we will need to work closely with the Government and others to represent the interests of our students, staff and the University as a whole. There will certainly be challenges but there will also be opportunities in this new reality and we must be agile enough to seize them.
Supporting all of you through this momentous change is really important, so to follow on from the immigration advice sessions we ran last year we have now agreed to provide further support to our EU employees from outside the UK, and to those joining us from outside the EU. We will be paying the fee for European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) staff who are eligible to apply for a Registration Certificate or Permanent Residence Card. Furthermore, to maintain and enhance our ability to attract international candidates from outside the EU we will be providing an enhanced relocation allowance to eligible candidates. We have also joined #WeAreInternational to play our part in ensuring our universities remain diverse, inclusive communities open to students and staff from across the world.
The University has received a Gold award in recognition for excellence in its teaching, as part of the UK Government’s new assessment of teaching quality in universities. The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) evaluates universities on criteria including teaching quality, learning environment and student outcomes, taking into account factors such as student satisfaction, retention rates and employment. We have a strong working relationship with our Students’ Union and engage with our students to enhance aspects of their learning such as developments in group working, feedback and personalised timetables. Our long-standing use of peer-assisted learning (PAL) and our peer mentoring scheme are prominent examples of how our students contribute to the overall learning experience. Our distinctive and supportive learning environment ensures that we continue to attract high calibre and highly motivated students.
Their findings show the University makes a significant economic impact at both national and local level. In B&NES alone, the University contributed £294 million to the local economy during 2014/15, representing 6.2% of the total economic output of the region. During the same period, the value of each additional student to the area was £9,560, further supporting economic growth. The estimated contribution to UK GDP was £352.2 million. The report estimates that in 2014/15 nearly 5,850 jobs in B&NES were supported by the University, our students and our visitors. The University itself employed 3,031 people in 2014/15 across a broad spectrum of jobs, paying salaries above the national average, making it the second largest employer in the area after the Royal United Hospital. The report highlights the University"s track record of providing secure jobs for local employees. One in every 17 jobs in the district was in some way dependent on us.
