The University of Brighton has been part of the city of Brighton & Hove since 1859, starting as a school of art in the kitchens of the Royal Pavilion and growing to become the diverse and inclusive institution it is today. We have more than 21,000 students and 2,800 staff studying and working at our five campuses in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings. Subjects taught here range from medicin...e to engineering, psychology to illustration, sport science to English literature.
Students are at the heart of all that we do and take an active role in their learning experience. They leave us ready to make a difference to the world. From small beginnings in 1850s Brighton, the University of Brighton has grown to a complex and diverse institution based in three towns across the south coast of England. Our students are part of a dynamic, diverse and creative community that embraces partnership working and that makes a positive difference to society.
We’re committed to developing and nurturing a diverse community, that supports not only inclusion in the university but through the impact of our activities in local, national and international communities. We champion and nurture inclusivity, diversity and equality to the highest levels, recognising the value it has to the future of our students, staff, partners and community.
Nurturing creativity is key to ensuring we continue to grow and develop our activities. We’re committed to creating new, radical and exciting opportunities for our students, staff and community. We recognise the scale of the challenges we face as an institution, society and world and place value on tackling these in creative and innovative ways.
We recognise and value the critical importance sustainability has for the future of our students, staff, partners and community. Whether it’s through buildings of the future, a strong and protected financial position or the long-lasting knowledge and support we give our students and staff – sustainability will be highly valued, underpinning decisions we make and the activities we do, now and in the future.
Partnership is at the core of who we are. Through partnership we create distinctive educational programmes, we share and disseminate our research and enterprise and we create mutual benefit to our city, our region and globally. They are critical to our success as an institution.
The University of Brighton is committed to providing a fair environment that embodies and promotes equality of opportunity. We value the different contributions and experiences of all who make up our community, promoting mutual respect and understanding as well as freedom of thought and expression.
We have held an institutional Athena SWAN Bronze Award since 2013 and became in 2017 one of only a handful of higher education institutions nationally to achieve an institutional award under the new expanded charter, which recognises success in developing gender equality across all academic disciplines. We are also a member of the Race Equality Charter and are committed to improving the representation, progression and success of minority ethnic staff and students at our university.
We are a proud Stonewall Diversity Champion, a programme which supports and promotes fair practice in relation to the employment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender staff, reaffirming our commitment to equality for LGBT+ staff and students. At the University of Brighton we believe we must respond to the imperative of sustainable development. We realise that a community of our size has a significant impact on our shared environment. Every one of us has a part to play in order to better conserve resources and reduce pollution.
We define sustainability as one of our core values, which we resolve to continually research and put into practice, demonstrated by getting a First Award out of 154 universities in People & Planet"s University League 2017. The university has been awarded £2.98m to deliver the Green Growth Platform, a strategic five-year project designed to support growth among regional SMEs working in environmental and low-carbon sectors.

We can trace our origins back to the mid-19th century in Brighton and the mid-20th century in Eastbourne. Since being granted university status in 1992 the university has grown steadily. More than 7,000 students graduate each year in a range of subjects as diverse as automotive engine design, law with accountancy, midwifery, three-dimensional design, architecture and pharmacy. To explore how we got here, we have picked out key moments that have shaped and defined the institution.
