Established in 1846 as the University at Lewisburg; renamed Bucknell University in 1886 in honor of William Bucknell, a major benefactor. The University is highly selective, private, nonsectarian, coeducational (since 1883), residential and undergraduate, with a small graduate program.Bucknell"s 450-acre campus is occupied year-round. But many more of our students compete in recreational sports through an extensive intramural program. It consists of more than 40 men"s, women"s and co-recreational teams — from basketball and golf to tennis and volleyball. Many students enjoy the friendly competition provided by the 20 student-initiated and student-run club sports.
The Office of Recreation Services is dedicated to the enrichment of the total person by recreating the individual"s physical, cognitive, and social life while enhancing their educational experience. Bucknell competes in NCAA Division I sports (football competes in the Division 1 - Football Championship Subdivision).
