Cal State East Bay has come a long way in the last 60 years — it’s had five presidents, gone by five different names and produced thousands of graduates who have entered the region’s workforce.For 60 years, Cal State East Bay has served the Bay Area as part of the California State University system, providing access to higher education for a diverse student body and advancing regional engagement through its academic programs and leadership.
Cal State East Bay is known as an early adopter, innovator, and leader of quality online education among CSU campuses.In fall 2017, nearly 20 percent of instruction was delivered through online or hybrid courses, and more than 15 percent of instruction is being offered completely online. In addition, 10 percent of students are taking courses exclusively online, and 55 percent of undergraduate students and 36 percent of graduate students are taking at least one online or hybrid course.
In the 2016-2017 academic year, Cal State East Bay offered 330 community-based learning courses, with 5,945 students engaged in more than 217,000 hours of service in the East Bay region. In the spring, 1,240 freshmen contributed more than 4,000 hours of service through the Freshman Day of Service. Pioneers for Change, the Center for Community Engagement"s service learning leadership program, contributed over 4,000 hours in the community through internships and community service.

We provide academic accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities.To begin that process, students must schedule a Welcome Meeting with an A.S. counselor. At this initial Welcome Meeting, accommodations will be determined on an individual basis while meeting with the student and reviewing current professional documentation. The purpose of such accommodations is to provide equal access to classroom programs and campus activities in a manner consistent with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, associated California laws and regulations, and CSU policies.
In addition to accommodation and support services to University students, faculty and staff members, we inform and collaborate with faculty and staff to ensure successful implementation of academic accommodations and to increase the level of access and inclusion of all individuals on campus.
Academic Advising and Career Education (AACE) is a one-stop center for both academic advising and career development assistance. Our counselors guide students in understanding and completing all General Education and graduation requirements in addition to helping them clarify and attain their career goals. AACE is also home to PACE (Program for Accelerated College Education) advising and is happy to open its doors to all eligible East Bay students and qualified alumni.
The Learning Commons is located in the Library Lower Mall and features individual and collaborative study space, PC computing, peer assistance at the Student Help Desk, and Assistive Technology software and machines. There are 83 desktop computers in the Learning Commons including five workstations with Assistive Technologies, a closed-circuit television (CCTV), and Sorenson Video Relay Service. Services are limited to registered students, staff, faculty and alumni.
Scholarships are funds and grants that do not require repayment. Individual donors, charitable organizations, local businesses, corporations, and the government offer them to students who meet specific criteria. They may be awarded on merit, need, or a combination of factors.

The university was originally named the State College for Alameda County when it was officially established by the California State Assembly in 1957. The first academic year began in 1959 at Sunset High School in Cherryland with 25 faculty and 293 students. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the current Hayward Campus were held in February 1961 and the college moved to its permanent location in Fall 1963. As the university continues to grow, it is known in particular for its diversity. From 2015-2017, The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Almanac designated the Cal State East Bay student body as the most diverse in the mainland United States.
