Nestled at the luscious base of the Green Mountains, the Castleton campus has a panoramic view of every season.Between watching the impending autumn claim the mountainside from residence hall balconies and conquering the spontaneous snowfalls in our snowboard park, students can enjoy Vermont’s natural beauty from every corner of campus.
Dating back to 1787, Castleton is the oldest unive...rsity in Vermont, and the 18th oldest in the nation. However, recent development projects offer students the opportunity to benefit from our modern facilities that have been influenced in their design by the Green Campus Initiative, which aims to reduce the University’s carbon footprint and to promote a sustainable future.
Reopened in September 2009, the Campus Center underwent a $7.5 million renovation and expansion. The facility was awarded a gold rating for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design by the US Green Building Council. Today the Campus Center acts as a social and academic focal point of the University.
Surrounding the Campus Center are Castleton’s 11 residence halls that vary between corridor and suite-style living. The Department of Residence Life also facilitates themed housing options in which students can opt to reside in substance-free Wellness Housing and those eligible can live in our Honors Housing. Castleton"s newest residence hall, Hoff Hall, has also achieved a LEED gold rating for its implementation of resource-efficiency and environmental responsibility.
Also in conjunction with the Green Campus Initiative, the newest installation of energy efficient products on campus is a ground mounted solar array and dual-vehicle electric fueling station located outside of Jeffords Hall.
Our academic buildings provide students with the opportunity to expand their learning with the most up to date technology. With modern lounges, labs, studios, digital media centers and more students can always access the latest innovations to hone their crafts.
Outside the classroom, the Fine Arts Center is home to Casella Theater and Black Box Theater, where many student performances take to the stage to a full house at various times throughout the academic year. Our state of the art athletic and exercise facilities aide to our Spartans’ success and the overall wellness of our community. The Spartan Athletic Complex provides team rooms, classrooms, athletic training facilities, as well as a swimming pool and fitness center for all 29 varsity teams. Attached to the complex is a community-accessible fitness center that is also available for student and faculty use.
Renovated in 2010, our baseball and softball fields are among some of the finest in New England and are complete with enclosed dugouts and proper irrigation and drainage systems. Neighboring the fields is Spartan Stadium, our multi-use artificial turf facility. Since its opening in the fall of 2009 Spartan Stadium has hosted nearly 2,000 Castleton sporting events.
Directly outside the stadium sits the Castleton Pavilion, which is the largest venue of its kind in the state of Vermont and is designed to accommodate up to 3,000 guests. The pavilion serves as the site for graduation, large university meetings and a variety of other campus events. Additionally, the space serves as the perfect venue for the community to host weddings, trade shows, corporate picnics and more. In the winter the pavilion is transformed into a covered skating rink for the campus and community to enjoy, free of charge.
From our outdoor opportunities to our newly renovated facilities, academic endeavors and state of the art athletic equipment, Castleton has something to offer everyone.
