Concord University knows that academic advising is critical to college success. We offer advisingand support that provides students with a strong foundation from which to build their futures.Academic Resources are also available online to assist students and faculty advising sessions during fall/spring scheduled advising as well as throughout the academic year. Some advising resources include program progression sheets and four-year plans that outline required courses and the semester progression of each program, the academic calendar, and other items essential to successful program completion.
The Interdisciplinary Studies Program at Concord University offers students the opportunity to design a course of study that meets a particular career or professional need not available in a single existing degree program. Scholars recognize that exciting career challenges cut across traditional specialties and demand expertise in more than one subject area.
The BA/BS degree in Interdisciplinary Studies enables students to include as many as four different subject areas.This is not an appropriate degree option for the student who is undecided about a major. However, it is the ideal program choice for the student with a career plan that is multi-disciplinary and includes professional goals that are quite specific. Students will work with a faculty committee drawn from the desired subject areas to ensure that the overall plan is coherent and that every class is appropriate. Every IDS student can benefit from the total range of expertise and talent available from the Concord University faculty.
All Students must complete a minimum of 120 semester hours to receive a baccalaureate degree, regardless of their field of specialization, and among these must be the minimum 39-40 semester hours prescribed in the General Education Program.
General Education is an essential element in an educational process designed around student learning expectations and the attainment of the skills, knowledge, and attitudes. At Concord University, the General Education Program is a coherent series of courses that emphasize the common learning of a shared body of knowledge, the development of intellectual skills, and an appreciation of the diverse social and cultural values and institutions that make up the modern world.Through studies in these basic liberal arts and sciences, students gain a foundation for specialized studies, are equipped with the tools and skills necessary to pursue further learning, and acquire an understanding of the modes of inquiry and the ways of knowing.
Although General Education continues throughout the full four years, students will take most of the General Education Program in their first two years. This makes it possible to explore programs and fields of specialization.The General Education Program consists of some courses which are absolute requirements; others allow for academic choices.
The Regents Bachelor of Arts Program is tailored to help returning students finish their college degrees. Regents students are eligible to receive college credit for work experience, professional certifications, and military training.The department of Technology Services offers great opportunities for teaching at Concord University– whether on-campus or at a distance. Faculty may use the resources of our IT to develop new methods of teaching and to bring new technologies to resolve difficult teaching strategies. Our goal is to provide improved access to education at Concord University by providing courses in various nontraditional ways to meet the needs of students who cannot attend regular day and evening classes and to enhance the course offerings to our traditional students.
Students who engage in original research gain a deeper understanding of the material and an appreciation for what it means to work in his or her chosen field. They also benefit from working closely with faculty members and other students as they solve problems. Students can present their work at national and regional conferences, West Virginia"s Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol, and CU"s Undergraduate Research Day. Additionally, participating in undergraduate student research has become an important part of gaining admission into graduate and professional programs.
