DSU enjoys a long history as one of America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Founded in 1891 as the State College for Colored Students, DSU is proud of our heritage as one of the country’s first land-grant educational institutions. Today, we’re a welcome center of learning for students from many backgrounds. DSU’s main campus is located in the historic city of Dover, the capital of Delaware. Arguably one of the best-kept secrets on the East Coast, Dover provides a small-town feel for students who want to learn without the distractions of an urban campus. Yet, we’re only 1.5 hours away from major cities, including Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, DC, and a short drive to popular Rehoboth and Ocean City beaches. DSU @Georgetown is home to the connected degree program in partnership with DSU and DTCC.We welcome students from a variety of backgrounds. Our current enrollment stands at 4,600, 93% of whom are undergraduate students.Our ratio of male to female students is 36:64, and more than 80% of our freshmen live on campus in one of our nine residence halls.
DSU currently offers 42 undergraduate degree options, an impressive number for a school our size. DSU offers more than 60 academic paths, from undergraduate programs in the traditional liberal arts to doctoral programs in high-level sciences such as neuroscience, optics and mathematical physics. We are accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), and many of our programs have earned national accreditation as well.
DSU is made up of five academic colleges. Each degree-granting college specializes in a unique field of study, yet they also frequently work together to offer interdisciplinary degree programs and undertake complex research.
Our Adult/Continuing Education division offers test preparation courses, professional certificate programs and a variety of other learning opportunities to help adults succeed in real-world careers.Technology is changing the way we learn, and at DSU we offer our students many ways to achieve their intellectual goals. For those students who cannot pursue their degree program at one of our campuses, we offer online and distance learning educational programs.
Our Honors Program admits academically talented students who are committed to intellectual excellence. Students in our Honors Program have the opportunity to pursue innovative learning techniques, including more active intellectual participation, discussion and involvement in the search for knowledge.
We offer international programs that integrate a global perspective into teaching, research and study abroad. Our international program department forges mutually beneficial partnerships with institutions of higher learning around the world, including a wide range of public and private sector agencies and organizations.
In addition to our national-caliber faculty and extensive program offerings, DSU also provides students with numerous academic support services. These services give students the tools they need to achieve academic and social success, career planning insight and leadership training.
To help our students transition to college and establish a strong academic foundation, DSU offers a variety of support services.
