Founded and sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, Georgian Court University is located in Lakewood, New Jersey. Set on a magnificent 156-acre estate formerly belonging to financier George Jay Gould, the campus is conveniently situated 60 miles from New York and Philadelphia, and only 10 miles from the Jersey Shore. Bordering Lake Carasaljo, the site is a National Historic Landmark with alluring statuary, beautiful architecture and lush gardens.
After a long history as a women’s college with coeducational graduate programs and undergraduate evening programs, Georgian Court became fully coeducational in 2013.
Georgian Court University provides comprehensive liberal arts education in the Roman Catholic tradition while maintaining its historic special concern for women. The Georgian Court atmosphere is one of a small college ambiance in a technologically advanced, highly esteemed university setting. The faculty is committed to teaching and individual mentoring, as 92% hold doctorates or terminal degrees in their field. They are dedicated and caring educators and experts in their respective industries, leading more than 30 undergraduate degrees, 11 graduate degrees, and a variety of certificates. GCU has three schools: the School of Arts & Sciences, the School of Business & Digital Media, and the School of Education.
Georgian Court University prepares students for life beyond the campus gates. By senior year, 90% of undergraduate students have participated or plan to participate in some type of practicum, internship, field experience, co-op, or clinical placement. In addition, undergraduates are required to participate in service learning. And 92% of seniors rated their entire GCU educational experience as “excellent” or “good.”

Experiential learning allows you to gain knowledge, develop skills, and clarify values through direct experience and focused reflection. By exploring your interests and abilities, you will be able to make a more informed choice about your career options. These experiences will allow you to observe and apply concepts that you are learning in the classroom to real-life settings and also make you more competitive in today’s job market.
At GCU, we require that you have two experiential learning experiences to graduate. This can include service learning (click above), internships (click above), or a travel or study abroad program. One must be service learning in a designated course other than First-Year Seminar. The other can be an internship, practicum or field study, study abroad experience or a second service learning.
An internship combines a supervised work experience with a structured academic plan that includes learning objectives. An internship may be full time or part time, paid or unpaid. This is an excellent way to gain work experience related to your major and is one of the most important credentials you can list on your résumé. Though a maximum of one internship can be counted toward the experiential learning requirement, you can may participate in as many internships as you’d like.
