Lipscomb was founded in Nashville, Tenn., in 1891 by two individuals–David Lipscomb and James A. Harding–who believed that a truly educated individual of their time could not be so without attention given to spiritual growth as well as academics. So in addition to its role as the most important guidebook in a Christian’s life, the Bible was also given an academic position along with, we s...uppose, the works of Aristotle, Ovid and other hallmarks of a classical education.
The school opened with men, women and children attending (the beginnings of our 1,300-student pre-kindergarten through grade 12 campus school) and has grown into a consistently top-ranked university. Sure, things have changed from that October day in 1891, but what grounded us then grows us to this day. The university is still a place of academic rigor and spiritual growth with more than 4,500 students enrolled at the university. They can choose from eight bachelor’s degrees in 78 majors or 145 areas of undergraduate study, several pre-professional programs and an accelerated evening and online adult degree program for those who wish to complete their undergraduate degrees. Lipscomb also offers 25 master’s degrees, four education specialist degrees and three doctorate degrees in 58 fields of study.
Lipscomb University is a private coeducational institution whose principal focus is undergraduate education in the liberal arts and sciences, combined with a number of undergraduate professional and pre-professional fields, and master"s and doctoral degree programs. Its primary mission is to integrate Christian faith and practice with academic excellence. This mission is carried out not only in the classroom but also by involvement in numerous services to the church and the larger community.

To ensure our students can go both wide and deep in their studies, Lipscomb University includes nine discipline-focused colleges (such as Business, Education, and Pharmacy & Health Sciences) along with a liberal arts college. Several academic institutes dedicated to special subjects—Conflict Management, Christian Spirituality, Civic Leadership and Sustainable Practice, for example—round out our offering.
From accounting to visual arts, Lipscomb undergraduates choose from more than 78 majors in 145 areas of study for a bachelor"s degree. And those degrees count: consistently, more than 90 percent of Lipscomb alums begin jobs or graduate school within a year of graduating. Speaking of graduate school, we also offer more than 48 degrees, plus 21 certificates and endorsement programs at the graduate level.

Because Lipscomb’s commitment to providing a fully rounded education doesn’t stop at academics, we offer programs that integrate learning with service, travel, ministry, and more.These aren’t degree tracks; rather, they’re opportunities to discover and develop yourself as a whole human being.
