Maine Maritime Academy is a public, co-educational college located in the coastal town of Castine, Maine. Our student population numbers approximately 950 students in courses of study in engineering, management, science, and transportation. Maine Maritime Academy is a career-oriented college and globally recognized leader in providing rigorous and practical maritime, engineering, engineering technology, marine science, and logistics education with facilities and laboratories that are at the leading edge of technological innovation. Rigorous academic programs are designed and managed by a faculty from diverse academic backgrounds and from industrial positions in engineering, ship operations, marine sciences, maritime management, and small vessel design and operation.
Hands-on training has been the hallmark of a Maine Maritime Academy education since its founding in 1941. Employers hire MMA students for their mastery of classroom theory and applied technology. Our graduates land leadership positions—from the bridge of a supertanker, to the Pentagon, to the boardrooms of Fortune 500 companies. Many of our graduating seniors accept employment with companies they work for as students during cadet shipping or cooperative education assignments.
In addition to classroom education, MMA students have opportunities to work alongside world-class research faculty on projects such as low-emissions biofuels development and testing, wind turbine design, tidal and wave hydrokinetic devices, ocean studies research, such as food web dynamics related to climate change, and many other topics. These research opportunities enhance hands-on application of fundamentals learned in the classroom. In addition to academic research opportunities with faculty, students are encouraged to seek summer research positions where appropriate. The Center for Applied Research and Education (CARE) supports faculty, staff and students in seeking and administering funding for research grants, contracts, and other extramural funding.
Maine Maritime Academy is a career-oriented, public college on the coast of Maine, serving approximately 950 students. We prepare students to be navigation officers and engineers for any size vessel on any ocean; to manage the design, installation, and operation of shore-based utilities worldwide; to work in marine biology and marine science careers; and to manage global logistics and business operations in international trade.

There are many aspects to Student Life at Maine Maritime Academy. If we were to use one word, active best describes our student body. If you like to be involved in various activities, organizations, hobbies, and/or athletics, you’ll be right at home at MMA.
A distinguishing feature of our student life is a blend of a traditional college lifestyle with different life experiences for those who participate in the Regiment of Midshipmen. Being a Midshipman is a choice that is usually determined by your academic major (see note below) but all students are encouraged to take advantage of the benefits of the Regiment. Currently our student body has about 70% participation in the regiment.
Regardless of membership, you are not limited in your ability to associate and participate in student life. Traditional and regimental students live together in the residence hall, attend the same classes, and are eligible to participate in all campus clubs, organizations, activities, and athletics.
The Department of Residential Life and Student Activities supports the Academy’s academic mission by fostering a welcoming living and learning environment through a holistic approach to education.
