Northern"s communities of service are deeply tied to the region, a fact that influences both the educational choices of our students and the ways in which we serve them.
We primarily serve rural communities within a 40 mile radius of our main camp...us in Española, New Mexico, including eight Native American communities, within one of the most underserved regions in the state.

NORTHERN employs more than 40 experienced, full-time faculty and 22 full-time PhD faculty. Classes are small and personal. Average class sizes at NORTHERN range from 12-15 students, allowing you to get personal, one-on-one instruction from faculty.
Between student government, our many clubs and organizations, performances, art shows, community events and sports teams, there are so many ways to get involved in extracurricular student life @Northern.
Student Life is a committee that supports and organizes student events and activities. We work closely with Student Senate and student clubs to ensure that student activity fees are spent effectively and enhance the whole student experience at Northern New Mexico College.
We offer degrees in business administration, engineering & technology, teacher education, nursing, fine arts, humanities and social services, and the sciences. We are a comprehensive institution offering the most affordable bachelor"s degree programs in the state and the southwest.
Founded in 1909 as the Spanish-American Normal School in El Rito, the institution"s original mission was to train the area"s Spanish speakers to become teachers. In 1977, Northern became the state"s first designated Community College, and 2005 became New Mexico"s newest baccalaureate granting institution.
Thirty eight full-time faculty and approximately 85 part-time faculty provide instruction toward the completion of 15 baccalaureate degrees, 35 associate degree and 14 certificate programs. In 2014, Northern completed a review of the total credit hours required to earn an associate and bachelor’s degree, leading to a reduction of required hours to 60 and 120 respectively for most degrees. Due to accreditation requirements and other industry regulations, some degrees may require additional hours.
