The university was established in 1957 through a generous donation from founders Alfred and Matilda Dodge Wilson. They contributed their historic estate and $2 million to Michigan State University to establish a satellite school, named Michigan State University – Oakland.

The Bachelor of Integrative Studies (BIS) degree is a university-wide degree program that enables students to custom design their own plan of study. OU students can study abroad in more than 40 countries around the world or study away at nearly 200 universities in North America. Disability Support Services acts as an advocate for students with disabilities and works with 500-600 students per semester. In addition to helping students understand university policies and practices, we assist students in addressing personal and academic concerns. We supply referrals to other university offices when appropriate.
