The 12-member Corporation is the body that has the ultimate authority to exercise control over ownership of property, to promulgate and amend the by-laws, to accept or reject the recommendation for election to the Presidency of the College by the Board of Trustees, and to elect members of the Corporation and of the Board of Trustees.
The Corporation is comprised of four ex officio members... and eight other individuals elected by the Corporation, four Dominican friars and four lay persons. The ex officio members are the provincial of the Province of St. Joseph, the elected leader of the Dominican Order for the eastern region of the United States; the Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Providence; the president of the College; the executive vice president/treasurer and the chair of the Board of Trustees.
The terms of office of the Bishop, the president, the provincial and the chair of the Board of Trustees are co-terminus with the respective incumbency of each. The term of all other members is three years.
The College president is the chief executive of the institution. The President’s Cabinet, consisting of the president, executive vice president/treasurer and six vice presidents, is the primary organizational vehicle by which the College is administered. The Cabinet typically meets weekly to discuss major administrative issues and make policy decisions.Responsibility for implementing Cabinet decisions rests with the appropriate vice president and/or the College president.

Providence College was founded in 1917 through a joint effort of the Diocese of Providence and the Dominican Friars of the Province of St. Joseph, with the blessing of Pope Benedict XV and the consent of the General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island.
The driving force behind the development of the College was the late Rt. Rev. Matthew Harkins, D. D., Bishop of Providence, whose dream it was to create a center of advanced learning primarily for the Catholic youth of Rhode Island.However, the College’s charter demonstrates that the founders intended PC to serve members of all religious faiths as it reads: “no person shall be refused admission . . . nor shall any person be denied any of the privileges, honors, or degrees in said college on account of the religious opinion he may entertain.”
Bishop Harkins’ negotiations with the Dominicans of the Province of St. Joseph and his gifts of approximately 17 acres of land and $10,000 in scholarship funds helped make Providence College a reality. With donations coming primarily from Catholics of modest means, and a pledge from the Province of St. Joseph to provide Dominican administrators and teachers, the College broke ground for the imposing Harkins Hall in 1917. Two years later, in September 1919, it opened its doors to 71 students and nine Dominican faculty members.
The Office of the Dean of Students and the Director of Cultural Education guide Cultural Agility initiatives (Pillar III of the Friar Four) for the Division of Student Affairs. Our programs seek to create awareness of cultural differences, support self-reflection, and build cultural competencies. We provide opportunities for educational dialogue about on-campus, local, and global traditions and concerns, and support a wide variety of cultural groups and mentorship programs on campus.
