Community-based learning (CBL) is an experiential instructional strategy that engages students in solving problems within their schools and communities as part of their academic studies, transforming them from passive recipients to active participants in their education and community while providing a deeper understanding of theories and course content.
Service learning (SL) is a form of CBL that emphasizes serving not-for-profits and communities in need to meet a course’s learning outcomes. CBL and SL courses at Saint Joseph’s College encourage tolerance, leadership, and civic and social responsibility, while promoting the core values of the College. The Office of Community-based Learning promotes and supports the integration of this experiential component into course content, furthering the Mercy tradition of service on which the College was founded.
The Honors Program allows high-achieving students to receive an enhanced version of the educational experience that Saint Joseph’s College offers to its students. Honors students take special versions of the Inner Core courses in history, theology, philosophy, and ecology. That means that they satisfy the requirements of the Honors Program and many of the college-wide Core Curriculum requirements at the same time. It also means that students participate in the Honors Program regardless of whatever major they choose. In addition, Honors students take a senior capstone course which allows them to tie together their previous coursework and pursue a project that relates to their interests and/or major.
Individual or groups of courses within the various degree programs may be taken for continuing education purposes as desired. Courses are available for certification renewal, contractual requirement, or professional development.
The Office of Continuing Education and Training also provides educational opportunities beyond online courses. Educational programming can be face-to-face, online or a hybrid of the two. Both credit and professional development non-credit courses are available. The length of a program can vary from a one-day workshop to a one-week intensive course to a 10-module customized training program for an Education Partner.
The college experience can sometimes bring with it challenges – both positive and not-so-positive. Counseling Center staff can often help students deal with some of the difficulties encountered along the way.
