Since its founding in 1864, Swarthmore College has given students the knowledge, insight, skills, and experience to become leaders for the common good. With a curriculum unmatched among liberal arts colleges of its size, Swarthmore offers more than 600 courses and undergraduate research opportunities, in science, engineering, humanities, and social sciences. The College"s exceptional honors program is built on the idea that engaging in dialogue is the best way to truly master material. One hallmark of the program is the small seminar-style classes in which each student has a chance to speak, as well as lead discussions.
This collaborative approach fosters an environment in which students share research results, workshop papers, and continue discussions long after class meetings. Another distinctive feature is the exchange between students and external examiners who come to campus to meet with seniors, both to assess their work and enter into a dialogue about it.
With training, mentorship, and support from the Lang Center for Civic and Social Responsibility, Swarthmore students, faculty, and staff connect with local volunteer opportunities, initiate projects to tackle some of society"s greatest challenges, and incorporate community-based learning into the classroom.

Our application process is thorough and requires submission of family information as well as income documentation, so that we can base the financial aid decision on a holistic picture of your family’s economic situation. Once you submit your financial aid application, our Financial Aid Committee carefully considers all of your family’s detailed information, which we use to determine your family’s ability to contribute to the costs of a Swarthmore education.
Although we believe that the primary responsibility to pay for college lies with students and their families, we fill in the gap when family resources do not meet our costs. We encourage you to contact our staff if you would like to discuss your individual application, or if you have general questions about how our financial aid application process works.
Academic advising is directly coordinated through the office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and indirectly coordinated through academic departments. Some learning resources are coordinated through the office of the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, such as Student Disability Services, Pre-Med and Pre-Law advising, the Office of Fellowships and Prizes, and some tutors. Other resources are based in departments (Ninjas, Science Associates, PiRates, Wizards, etc.) or in designated spaces on campus (The Writing Center, Career Services).
Most students use one or more of these resources during their time at Swarthmore to enhance their experience, maximize their performance, or prepare for graduate school or career. As a small, caring institution, we strive to open up advising and resources to all and encourage students to collaborate with trained peer tutors and with professional advisors.
