We envision study abroad as an opportunity for you to gain global competency and learn the global skills necessary for success in your classes and subsequent career. As a first year student, you will be housed in one of UMaine’s six first-year or three honors residence halls. Most students will have one or two roommates, though some single rooms are available. You will also have the option of applying to be part of a themed living learning community within your residence hall where you and your classmates will explore topics from outdoor adventures to science.
Your life won’t be all academics – and in your free time, you will need to know where to go to have some fun. From campus-wide events to intramural athletics to swimming in the pool, UMaine is a busy place.
UMaine is located in Orono, a classic college town bounded by the Stillwater and Penobscot Rivers. We’re located just north of Bangor, a city consistently ranked as one of the most desirable places to live for its natural beauty, safety, quality of life and affordability.
Campus is within an easy driving distance from the the Appalachian Trail, great whitewater rafting, outlet shopping, sandy beaches and some of the best skiing in the East. But you don’t need to leave to take advantage of the great outdoors. We have more than 15 miles of groomed trails on campus for walking, biking, cross-country skiing and more.
