One university inspiring and empowering the creation of knowledge that changes the world.

When it comes down to it, you’re coming to college for an education. Oh, there’s no denying that the culture and athletics and student life are great (and very important), but, in the end, you’re looking for a degree and a plan for the future. Conveniently, UAB happens to have all of those things – except for the plan – but we can help you build that yourself. We offer more than 115 areas of study, including a few that you can’t find anywhere else in the state, or even the region. And you definitely can’t find our top-notch, field-tested, nationally renowned, actually-really-nice-in-person faculty anywhere else in the state. Mostly because, well, they’re here.
UAB embodies a spirit of discovery that advances knowledge, solves real-world problems and drives economic development.
Our research faculty ranks among the nation’s best funded and is noted for exceptional mentoring and training — from undergraduate researchers to post-doctoral fellows. This work is supported by more than $430 million in sponsored research funds each year, and it is conducted in the departments of 10 schools, 24 universitywide research centers, UAB hospitals and clinics and field sites by faculty, fellows and students collaborating among themselves and with others around the globe. Research at UAB spans the spectrum and mingles disciplines to investigate, reveal and apply knowledge that changes the lives of individuals and the fates of communities. We do this to provide answers. Solutions. Hope.
The mission of the UAB Office of Service Learning and Undergraduate Research is to connect UAB students, faculty, and community nonprofit partners together to enrich student academic learning, promote civic engagement, and to strengthen and support our local and global communities.

The Office of Service Learning also supports and models the UAB Values of collaboration and community involvement.
UAB is a Carnegie Community Engaged institution because of its commitment to curricular engagement through service learning and support for collaborative interactions with community and related scholarship for the mutually beneficial exchange, exploration, and application of knowledge, information, and resources. Since 2008, UAB has been a member of the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service to our communities. The Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a college or university can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement.
UAB Service Learning and Undergraduate Research helps faculty integrate hands-on service with classroom curriculum while serving as a liaison for faculty, students, and community partners. With a focus on quality experience for all parties involved, UAB Service Learning addresses concerns about academic rigor, time constraints, and liability to ensure opportunities are fully utilized.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) traces its roots to the 1859 founding of the Medical College of Alabama and the 1936 opening of the Birmingham Extension Center of the University of Alabama. In 1945 the Medical College of Alabama was moved from Tuscaloosa and the University"s Medical Center was founded in Birmingham. In 1954 the Extension Center was moved to a newly constructed facility adjacent to the Medical Center, bringing together for the first time the University"s two academic components in Birmingham. Later, in November of 1966, the Extension Center and the Medical Center were administratively merged to form the "University of Alabama in Birmingham," an organizational component of the University of Alabama (in Tuscaloosa). In 1969 UAB became an independent institution, one of the autonomous universities within the newly created three-campus University of Alabama System.
Today, UAB is a comprehensive urban university with a nationally recognized academic health center. UAB is the only public, four-year degree granting university in the state"s largest metropolitan area. UAB is the largest research institution in the state of Alabama and is the largest single employer in the state.
