The University of Charleston is an independent, co-educational residential university with two principal locations in West Virginia – a main campus in the state capital of Charleston and a second campus in Beckley. The University also has a str...ong online program.
The University of Charleston is unique in offering a performance-based curriculum focused on specific outcomes, determined to be essential abilities every student should have for a lifetime of learning and opportunity. The Liberal Learning Outcomes – critical thinking, communication, citizenship, creativity, involvement, ethical practice and inquiry – are embedded in all UC programs to help students understand and apply how coursework relates to the real world, the student and lifelong career building.
Many programs provide advanced, unique professional development opportunities including internships, campus speakers and other events, and mentoring.
The mission of the University of Charleston is to educate each student for a life of productive work, enlightened living, and community involvement.
The University"s mission is an expression of shared values and goals. These include:
  • Offering selected quality programs affording professional preparation in a liberal arts environment.
  • Preparing students to live in an increasingly complex and changing society by helping them develop the knowledge, abilities, and character needed to be lifelong learners.
  • Utilizing and enriching the strong relationship between the University and the greater Charleston community to prepare students for a life rich in community involvement.

UC prepares students to contribute to society immediately and throughout their lives. Their work will vary tremendously, but we hope that each graduate will improve his or her world. “Productive” work isn"t defined by the acquisition of great material gain for the graduate, but by the positive impact of the work on the graduate"s community and world.
College graduates must own a broad range of knowledge to thrive in modern society. Graduates should be scientifically, economically, politically, aesthetically, and culturally literate. They should have a sense of history and shared values, and a commitment to moral purpose and personal character.
UC attempts to develop within every student a pattern of community involvement. The foundation of our democratic society rests on community involvement, so we want graduates to take leadership responsibility and initiative in shaping organizations, institutions, and communities.
We believe that college is about finding your true destination. Developing the tools and knowledge to become a sought after employee. Discovering innovative approaches to solving issues. And building relationships that will help nurture and guide you to reach your goals, create new and lasting friendships, and to help you feel a part of a thriving community.
We"ve also done away with that long list of required courses and put the basics like writing, science and ethics into each major – so rather than learning them in the abstract, you’ll learn them in the context of your future career. Add to that the opportunity to earn your bachelor"s degree in less than four years, the opportunity to accelerate directly into a graduate program, and the ability to customize your education to match your own strengths and interests, and you"re looking at an education that"s revolutionary.
Focused and flexible, University of Charleston is home to a distinguished group of graduate programs including our School of Business, School of Pharmacy and Physician Assistant Program.
