The Counseling Center provides counseling, outreach and psychological consultation to UIS students. Counseling services are free of charge to UIS students that have paid the Health and Counseling Fee.

The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs & Provost oversees academic and budgetary policy and priorities, ensures the quality of the faculty and student body, and helps to maintain educational excellence. The VCAA/Provost reports to the Chancellor and serves as the university’s chief academic and budget officer. She/he provides leadership for mission-driven academic and co-curricular endeavors and functions, coordinates academic affairs initiatives and programs with other university divisions, directs activities surrounding the implementation and achievement of the academic mission, and coordinates university budget and planning activities.
In 1960, a group of central Illinois citizens, united in their goal of bringing a four-year university to the capital city, formed the Springfield Committee for Higher Education. Legislation creating Sangamon State University (SSU) was signed in 1969. The first classes were held in 1970, which is considered the founding year of SSU.
