Undergraduate research (UR) is self-directed/designed academic work by an individual student or team of students that addresses a research question with the expectation of a scholarly or creative product intended for publication or presentation on or off campus. UNC Asheville founded the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) 32 years ago and celebrated the milestone by bringing more than 4,000 undergraduate research students to campus in 2016.
Undergraduate research offers hands-on experience in the field, guided by expert faculty who let students take the lead. More than 60 percent of UNC Asheville students complete original research in their field of study through the university’s nationally recognized Undergraduate Research Program—an opportunity most often found in graduate programs.
Service learning is an approach to teaching and learning in which students use academic knowledge and skills to address community needs. For example, health and wellness students may volunteer time at a nursing home teaching participants exercises or leading other wellness activities.
The Key Center for Community Engaged Learning is the hub of community engagement at UNC Asheville, connecting students, faculty, staff, and community partners in meaningful and transformative relationships that strengthen communities and address societal needs. Whether it’s a one-time project, an on-going commitment, or an academic service-learning course, our primary goal is to support and facilitate UNC Asheville community members as they connect and engage with the larger communities of Asheville, Western North Carolina, the nation and the world.
UNC Asheville’s Honors Program provides a rich curriculum for motivated students who seek to understand themselves and make a difference in the world. Together, students, staff, and faculty create a community of dedicated and enthusiastic scholars who care for the well-being of all.
