Founded in 1910, The University of Southern Mississippi opened its doors as a small teachers’ college. Today, the University has grown into a comprehensive doctoral and research-driven institution with a proud history and an eye on the future.

A major is an academic program that determines the classes you take and degree you earn when you graduate. Many of our majors offer more than one degree, which allows you to specialize; we have more than 140 degree programs in total. Degrees span the liberal arts, business, education, psychology, health, nursing, science and technology. A number of our programs are nationally recognized or are considered the best in Mississippi.
About 3,400 students live in campus residence halls or fraternity/ sorority houses on our residential Hattiesburg campus. Students are in the center of a vibrant campus atmosphere and can walk or bike to class and hundreds of annual events.
Students commute to the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, but the drive is literally a beach trip, with the white sands and blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico across from campus.
With 12 campus dining locations - 11 in Hattiesburg - and a variety of meal plans to fit your budget, you’ll never have gaps in your dining coverage. Eat healthy, fast, late - or anywhere in between - as your appetite or schedule dictates.
