Founded in 1782, Washington College was the first college chartered in the sovereign United States of America. General George Washington lent us his name, donated 50 guineas to our founding, and served on our first Board of Visitors and Governors. Washington College students work closely with exceptional faculty on projects they are passionate about. With independent research facilitated by programs like the Cater Society and Toll Fellows and hands-on learning provided by our Signature Centers, our students have access to amazing opportunities no matter what they’re studying. Print a chapbook on the antique letterpresses in the Rose O’Neill Literary House, scan the Chester River on one of the Center for Environment & Society’s research vessels, or study the history in our own backyard with the Starr Center.

Our student body draws roughly 1,480 students from 29 countries, and with a student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1 and an average class size of 17, you’ll never feel like a number.

Washington College shelters local chapters of several national honor societies for specific disciplines. Other honor societies, such as like Omicron Delta Kappa, recognize scholars who are also campus leaders.

While Washington College does not offer full tuition scholarships, every international applicant who qualifies for admission is automatically considered for a Colin Ferguson Tuition Grant. These grants range from $11,000 to $23,000 annually and are offered on the basis of scholastic achievement. We consider academic records, the admission essay and letters of recommendation in determining whether to award a Ferguson Grant. Assuming you receive the maximum Colin Ferguson grant of $23,000, international students admitted to Washington College will need at least $33,004 in personal or sponsored funds to meet your annual educational expenses.
The Global Education Office provides international and intercultural educational experiences for all Washington College students and seeks to foster global engagement and international competency campus wide. GEO promotes and facilitates study abroad for Washington College students and supports all visiting exchange and matriculating international students through mentorship programming, intercultural campus activities and off-campus trips.
Experiential Learning consists of experiences that enhance your degree and gain you “real world” experience. At Washington College, you can participate in an internship(s) and externship(s). Internships (long-term experiential learning, usually several months) and Externships (short-term experiential learning, over a few days) provide students with first-hand experience, which may help students to determine the next steps on their career path.
