The Mozarteum University offers over 40 artistic and education courses in the fields of music, the performing and visual arts. 1,500 young artists from all over the world experience comprehensive training here in all instruments, in composition, conducting, singing, musictheatre, acting, stage-directing, stage design, music and dance education, art and craft education as well as in music educat...ional theory and musicology.
500 lectures, many of whom are internationally renowned artists and teachers, pass on their knowledge and their art, thus making the university al place of lively intellectual exchange and dialogue.
The history of the Mozarteum University goes back to the year 1841 and is characterised by the work and teaching of outstanding personalities such as Bernhard Paumgartner, Clemens Krauss, Paul Hindemith, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Carl Orff and Sándor Végh. The Mozarteum School of Music was founded by the Salzburg Cathedral Music Association. In 1914 it became a conservatory, in 1953 an academy, in 1970 a Hochschule of music and performing arts and finally, in 1998, a university.
The Mozarteum University fosters international relations with associated music and art academies by means of an international exchange of lectures and students, scholarship programmes, exchange concerts and mutual projects.
Students and lectures engage in joint artistic activities as an integral part of the course programme. They perform in public in several concerts, plays, dance and opera productions as well as participation in exhibitions, thereby enriching cultural life in Salzburg. Besides intensive studies in an arts-friendly environment, networks are created here for later professional careers.
The UNIVERSITY MOZARTEUM SALZBURG In 1841, to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Wolfgang Amadé Mozart, a group of middle-class citizens founded the Cathedral Music Association and the Mozarteum. With this they intended to give added momentum to musical life in Salzburg by organising concerts, and also they wanted to ensure that there were enough young instrumentalists for the church services in Salzburg Cathedral. In 1870 the International Mozarteum Foundation was founded to encourage young talented musicians, and in 1881 it took over the Mozarteum Public Music School.
In 1914 the Mozarteum was recognised as a Conservatory under public law; in 1922 it was nationalised for financial reasons, and in 1939 it was transformed into the Reichshochschule Mozarteum. At the end of the Second World War the Mozarteum was temporarily continued under the title ‘Music High School’. In 1953 the Music High School became an academy and from 1970 it was known as the Mozarteum Academy of Music and Performing Art in Salzburg. In 1998, as a result of the reform of Austrian universities, the former academy of music became the now renowned Universität Mozarteum Salzburg.
The Mozarteum University at Mirabellplatz 1 houses under one roof all the artistic departments concerned with musical training at the Mozarteum University: conducting, composition and music theory, keyboard instruments, string and plucked instruments, wind and percussion instruments, music-theatre with a large opera studio, as well as musicology and music educational theory. Architecturally the New Mozarteum - built by Architect Robert Rechenauer in 2006 - opens out towards the city, large glass foyers invite Salzburgers and guests to pay a visit.
The chamber music hall known as the Solitär, the Large Studio and the smaller function rooms make the New Mozarteum a new, young, creative and high quality cultural centre in Salzburg.
The function rooms can also be hired. In 1979 the Mozarteum Academy, as it was then, moved from the Schwarzstrasse into the newly renovated palace of the prince-archbishop Paris Lodron. Wolfgang Amadé Mozart was allegedly a guest in that house and also gave concerts there.
In the spring of 2004, as the winner of an international competition, the Munich architect Robert Rechenauer and his office began work on the general renovation of the building. In Mozart Year 2006 it was finally opened with great success.
The Students’ Union at the Mozarteum represents the concerns and interests of the students in matters related to the university and state authorities. It has the necessary infrastructure and legal expertise so as to be able to solve the problems of individual students as well as representing the general needs of students in dealings with the authorities.
The aims of the instrumental courses at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg are for students to achieve artistic maturity and independence, the ability to reflect critically and evaluate their own abilities, to achieve artistic and scientific skills so as to be able to analyse musical works of art from all epochs, the ability to carry out a profession, the ability to fulfil artistic, educational and organisational tasks with a cultural dimension.
