The courses offered by LUCA - Faculty of the Arts have a strong artistic, critical and investigative profile. To safeguard this, there is permanent interaction between these courses and artistic and design-based research. Organising and encouraging research is one of the Faculty of the Arts’ core tasks.
The research, which is organised into four themed research units, is coordinated by the Central Board of Research. The research units support artists and research groups, develop interdisciplinary research projects and supervise PhDs.
The extremely varied expertise in the different courses offered by LUCA - Faculty of the Arts (music and the performing arts, audiovisual and visual arts and product design) challenges researchers to perform groundbreaking, interdisciplinary research. Furthermore, embedding LUCA’s research policy in the research environment at KU Leuven also creates innovative projects between art and science.
Research projects with a more themed or social focus often involve partners from the artistic world such as museums and music venues, art cinemas and multimedia companies. Furthermore, other social sectors are increasingly calling on artists’ and designers’ knowledge and skills.
LUCA believes in the added value of artistic and design-based research for the development and practice of the arts themselves, but also because of the strong imaginative and experimental potential that is inherent to this research, for the sciences and society in the broadest sense.
LUCA - Faculty of the Arts strives to be a European and global centre of excellence in terms of artistic research. To this end, the research units focus on all areas of the arts practiced by students and teachers so that they develop into international artists and designers. By encouraging and developing PhDs in the arts, LUCA - Faculty of the Arts wants to attract young artistic researchers who help to reinforce and further develop its research and education.
Given the need to build and bundle disciplinary expertise in all its study areas (music and drama, audiovisual arts, visual arts and design) LUCA - Faculty of the Arts fulfils an important role in attracting researchers, teachers and students with considerable talent and ambition.
Back in 1939, an elevated broadcasting point was sought for the new National Radio and Film Technical Institute, and the castle in Dudenpark proved to be the ideal location. In keeping with history, the Narafi campus continues to advance the tradition and evolution of both Film and Photography on this unique location in Brussels.
Courses on the Narafi campus are practically oriented bachelor degrees that link theory to practical lessons and train students to become creative professionals whose artistic and technical skills are highly valued by their clients.
The campus boasts well-equipped photo and film studios, a modern high-definition multi-cam TV studio, and nonlinear FCP/Avid editing and audio post-production suites. The Photography training course focuses on the profession of ‘photographer’, a term that has narrowed considerably due to the rapid digital evolution and new digital imaging technologies. Narafi prefers to use the term ‘image-makers’.
The teaching of art and architecture on the Sint-Lukas campus in Brussels stretches back more than hundred years.
